With upgrade paths for GX, GXplus, GS and GT customers, SMCC offers its graphics customers a complete portfolio of upgrade opportunities. Customers upgrading to the TurboGXplus graphics accelerator will take advantage of the fastest 2-D graphics accelerator in its class. Customers upgrading to SPARCstation 10ZX systems will get an unbeatable set of features and 3-D performance that establishes Sun as the price/performance leader in 3-D graphics. HARDWARE CONSIDERATIONS ----------------------- - TurboGXplus graphics accelerator occupies one SBus slot - SPARCstation 10ZX frame buffer occupies two SBus slots - TurboGXplus graphics upgrades are supported on the SPARCstation(TM) 2, SPARCstation 10, and SPARCserver(TM) 600MP systems - SPARCstation 10ZX upgrades are supported on SPARCstation 10 systems - Early versions of the SPARCstation 10 system may have an incompatibility with the SPARCstation 10ZX frame buffer which will require a motherboard swap when upgrading to the SPARCstation 10ZX system. A small number of SPARCstation 10 customers with a motherboard revision number of 501-1733-15 or less will need to order a motherboard upgrade part number UG-S10-MTHRBOARD, at no charge. This motherboard upgrade will be installed by a field engineer. Customers are required to return the older motherboard. The motherboard upgrade will be available July 19, 1993. SOFTWARE CONSIDERATIONS ----------------------- - Upgrades to TurboGXplus graphics accelerator require Solaris(R) 1.x operating environment or greater - Upgrades to SPARCstation 10ZX systems require Solaris 2.2 or greater If the customer is upgrading to a SPARCstation 10ZX system and has an earlier version of Solaris, they can order a Solaris upgrade license and media at no charge. AVAILABILITY ------------ Upgrades to TurboGXplus graphics accelerator and the SPARCstation 10ZX systems are available immediately. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS --------------------- Q. What must a customer return when upgrading to the TurboGXplus graphics accellerator or SPARCstation 10ZX system? A. The customer is required to return their GX, GXplus, GS frame buffers or Graphics Tower (including SBus card and cables) when upgrading to either the TurboGXplus graphics accelerator or SPARCstation 10ZX system. Q. Can a SPARCstation 10 Model 514MP customer upgrade their GX or GX+ frame buffer to SPARCstation 10ZX frame buffer? A. Due to the dual-wide Mbus modules used in the SPARCstation 10 Model 514MP, the SPARCstation 10ZX frame buffer will not work within the chassis. However, SPARCstation 10 Model 514MP customers that wish to upgrade their frame buffer to a SPARCstation 10ZX frame buffer can do so as long as they have an SBus expansion box to put it in. There are no issues in upgrading to Turbo GX+ however. Q. How can SPARCstation IPX(TM), SPARCstation LX(TM) and SPARCclassic(TM) customers get the TurboGXplus graphics accelerator for their systems? A. These customers have the choice of ordering the X1161A, which includes the TurboGXplus graphics accelerator and a 19-in. color monitor, or they can order the frame buffer, as a stand alone, (#501-2253) off of the spares pricelist.
