To Provide Customer Support SunService is devoted to providing systems and network support, education and value added services to end users of all Sun products. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- SUN ESTABLISHES INDEPENDENT COMPANY TO PROVIDE CUSTOMER SUPPORT Larry Hambly Named President of SunService Subsidiary MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif -- July 6, 1993 -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. has formed a new company devoted exclusively to providing systems and network support, education and value added services to end users of all Sun products. The company announced today that Larry Hambly, a 10-year veteran at Sun, has been named president of the wholly owned subsidiary, SunService(tm), Inc., which began operation July 1 and is headquartered in Milpitas, California. Scott G. McNealy, chief executive officer of Sun, said the new company illustrates Sun's commitment to service by creating a separate entity equal in importance to other Sun companies. "We are saying to the customer that service at Sun is equal in value to any product we offer. Having this business report directly to me will result in higher customer satisfaction and better return on investment," said McNealy. Hambly assumes the helm of SunService after serving as vice president of marketing at Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation, president of Sun Microsystems Federal, vice president of the U.S. Western Area for sales and service and other key positions at Sun. He has over 25 years experience as an engineer, sales manager and marketing executive in high technology companies. "SunService makes sense for two key reasons," said Hambly. "Most importantly, it places the customer first with an advocate reporting directly to the CEO of Sun. Second, with one service organization, we can be more effective in serving the varied needs of the end users across all Sun products. For example, SunService will be providing support for Solaris(R) on Intel and Power PC as sell as Solaris on SPARC(R) and we will offer support for all SPARC/Solaris system vendors in addition to Sun." Hambly's responsibilities will include managing a company that fields 550,000 calls a year at its 24 solution centers worldwide, services an installed base of more than 800,000 systems in 125 countries and works with over 250 service partners and over 2,000 service resellers. SunService has the largest number of UNIX experts in the industry and is the industry's largest UNIX training organization with 66 training centers in 20 countries. But more important, noted Hambly, is the 94 percent loyalty rating among Sun customers, as relayed through independent surveys in 1991 and 1992. SunService will continue to offer the traditional services featuring the new SunSpectrum Support(sm) program introduced in April. This worldwide service and support program meets the complete systems needs of customers throughout the enterprise. It offers the industry's most flexible, yet streamlined ordering and pricing policies, which help reduce administration time. For example, pricing has been greatly simplified, so that a single fee covers support for an entire system. In addition, SunService will continue to offer classroom and self-paced training products to end users and resellers of Sun products. An emerging business for SunService will be in providing a new set of high value-added services called Enterprise Services, which will include installation, graphics porting, network management, software migration, and disaster recovery. Hambly said his goal is to create the industry model for service by concentrating on SunService's core competencies -- or areas of expertise -- which include software support, education, service technologies, and partner management. He noted that SunService will continue to manage strategic partners through its "open service" program, which allows qualified service providers to complement SunService's expertise and geographic coverage. In addition, this strategy allows qualified resellers to support their end users by selling SunService or their own service contracts. Sun Microsystems, Inc., is an integrated portfolio of businesses that supply distributed computing technologies, products and services. Its innovative open client-server computing solutions include networked workstations and multiprocessing servers, operating systems software, silicon designs and other value-added technologies.
