What version of Solaris does I need to run an upgrade to a SPARCstation LX system? A. SPARCstation LX system upgrades are supported on Solaris 2.1 and later Solaris 2.x releases. Q. What Solaris license ships with a SPARCstation LX upgrade? A. If the system being upgraded is licensed for the same Solaris release that will be current when the upgrade ships, then no Solaris upgrade license or media should be ordered. Customers with previous releases should order a software upgrade at no charge. Q. If I upgrade to a SPARCstation LX system, how much additional memory can I put on my upgrade? A. The SPARCstation LX system has six SIMM slots for memory. The customer will receive 16 MB with the base system, occupying the first four slots. Customers have the option of adding 8 MB or 32 MB at the time of purchase. Q. Is the floppy drive included in the upgrade? A. The floppy drive was unbundled from both SPARCclassic and SPARCstation LX systems and is not included with the upgrade. Customers can order the floppy drive as an external x-option. Q. Which peripherals can I migrate to the SPARCstation LX system? A. The external desktop disk packs (104 MB, 207 MB, 424 MB), the tape desktop backup pack (150 MB, 2.5 GB, 5 GB), the desktop storage module (1.3 GB) and the desktop CD-ROM will work on SPARCstion LX. Q. When I upgrade, which SBus cards are supported from my older systems? A. Please refer to the Solaris 2.1 announcement material for a full list of supported SBus products on systems upgrading to the SPARCstation LX system. Q. Upgrade customers will include a Type 5 country kit with their order and will return the Type 4 keyboard to Sun. Q. What performance improvements can I expect when upgrading my SPARC systems? A. Desktop performance numbers are listed for your comparison. SPARCstation LX: 26.4 SPECint92, 21.0 SPECfp92 SPARCstation 2: 21.8 SPECint92, 22.8 SPECfp92 SPARCstation IPX: 21.8 SPECint92, 21.5 SPECfp92 SPARCstation IPC: 13.8 SPECint92, 11.1 SPECfp92 SPARCstation 1: 10 SPECmark89 SPARCstation 1+: 12 SPECmark89 SPARCstation SLC: 8.6 SPECmark89 SPARCstation ELC: 18.2 SPECint92, 17.9 SPECfp92 Q. What frame buffers will migrate to the SPARCstation LX systems? A. There is no need to migrate the frame buffers of older systems because the SPARCstation LX system has onboard GX. One exception is the SPARCstation 1 ECL monochrome customer, who will need to migrate the ECL frame buffer to the new system. Q. What happens to the SPARCstation IPC monochrome monitor when my customer upgrades to the SPARCstation LX system? A. The monochrome monitor will work with the SPARCstation LX onboard GX frame buffer and become a grayscale monitor. Q. When will the upgrades be available? A. You can begin ordering today. Shipments will begin December 7. Q. Are upgrades available to the SPARCclassic systems? A. No. Sun has provided attractive pricing on upgrades to SPARCstation LX systems so customers can take advantage of the added features of the SPARCstation LX, such as ISDN, 16 bit audio, and onboard accelerated graphics. Q. What is the warranty on an upgrade to the SPARCstation LX systems? A. When upgrading to the SPARCstation LX systems, the customer will receive a one year, return-to-factory warranty on the system or chassis. Any peripheral migrating to SPARCstation LX will maintain its original warranty. Please refer to the Warranty Policy announcement for more information.
