---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash SMCC INTRODUCES NETWORK TERMINAL SERVER SunFLASH Vol 49 #11 January 1993 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Offers Connectivity for Thousands of Users MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- January 19, 199333 -- Sun Microsystems Computer Corporation (SMCC) today introduced the Network Terminal Server, each of which allows 64 terminals or other serial peripheral devices to be connected easily and economically anywhere on a UNIX(R) system host-based local area network (LAN)that includes SPARCstation(TM) and SPARCserver(TM) computers running the Solaris(R) operating environment. The Network Terminal Server can be connected to any Sun(TM) server, including the recently introduced SPARCcenter(TM)2000, the SPARCserver 10 and the industry's highest-volume UNIX multiprocessor server, the SPARCserver 600MP. Multiple Network Terminal Servers can be integrated into one network, allowing connections for thousands of users. A desktop or rackmounted unit, the Network Terminal Server contains 64 serial ports and one parallel port per unit. It can deliver connectivity for terminals or a variety of peripheral devices, which include scanners, modems and personal computers, as well as many other devices on the network. "The new Network Terminal Server gives users the flexibility they need as they rightsize their environments," said Carl Stolle, group manager of server product marketing at SMCC. "And it allows them to preserve their investments in terminals and other equipment as they make the move from mainframes and minicomputers to client-server environments. "With the introduction of the Network Terminal Server and systems like the SPARCcenter 2000, Sun systems offer connectivity to thousands of users," he added. Users can take advantage of the low cost per port, expanding their networks in an economical fashion. In addition, because of its high reliability and ability to interface to multiple servers on a network, the Network Terminal Server is well suited for mission-critical applications. This eases the move to client-server computing. The Network Terminal Server also can be managed by SunNet(TM) Manager, the industry's leading SNMP network management solution. Network security is provided through data encryption, audit trails and user password. Through the product's TCP/IP support, users can simultaneously connect to multiple systems with a variety of network protocols. Serial Line Internet Protocol (SLIP) and Compressed SLIP support allow remote personal computer and X Window System connectivity. SMCC obtained the Network Terminal Server through an agreement with Burlington, Mass.-based Xylogics, Inc. Pricing and Availability The Network Terminal Server, which will commence shipment in February, 1993, is available from SMCC or SunExpress for $6,990.
