SPARCWORKS/TEAMWARE: CODE MANAGEMENT FOR DEVELOPMENT TEAMS by Rob Chang, Senior Product Manager, SunPro As software applications become larger and more complex, teamwork in code management is becoming increasingly important. Organizations need to minimize product development time, which means development teams have to work at peak efficiency. And while networked workstations and servers provide a powerful foundation for software development, they also place new and complex demands on code management tools. A new product from SunPro, called SPARCworks(TM)/TeamWare(TM), continues SunPro's commitment to delivering team-oriented software engineering tools. SPARCworks/TeamWare provides users with code management tools that are especially suited for networked development teams. This article discusses the development challenges the new product was designed to address and presents an overview of the main features of SPARCworks/TeamWare. WHAT IS CODE MANAGEMENT? Code management focuses on tracking, storing, and retrieving source information for a complete software project. Two basic code management tasks are: File Version Control. Tracking individual versions of source files, retrieving older versions of files, and coordinating modifications to source files. Release Management. Tracking a complete project (many files) as a single entity. Retrieving prior project releases for bugfixes and checkpointing releases for later retrieval. Depending on the software project, these tasks may be manual or automated. Many UNIX(R) developers have accelerated some of these tasks by using UNIX utilities such as SCCS and command scripts. NEW CHALLENGES FOR TEAM DEVELOPMENT Team-oriented software development adds a new dimension to traditional code management: distribution. Because development tasks and data are spread across multiple workstations and servers to reduce development time, new code management practices must be able to support and even encourage distributed software development. New tasks include: Release Integration. Integrating all the subcomponents of a project into a consistent deliverable. Because subcomponents may have complex interrelationships, integration must be carefully coordinated in order to avoid introducing bugs. Concurrent Release Management. Coordinating concurrent, interrelated development activities. In order for development teams to work at peak efficiency, developers may be working on multiple releases at the same time or working on the same source files simultaneously. Concurrent activities must be performed without interfering with each other. Multiple-Site Development. Managing development performed across multiple, loosely connected development sites. Teams are often spread across multiple sites which may not be connected via a high speed network. Or, developers may want to do work at home on their own computers. Work must proceed at multiple sites without developers or teams waiting. Multiple-Platform Development. Managing code across disparate development platforms. Tracking and consolidating changes must be performed on different development platforms. Build. Minimizing the time to build or re-build a project. Large projects often take many hours to build. Development teams must make full use of the most powerful machines in their workgroup. MEETING THE CHALLENGE As development cycles are shortened, teams need a code management solution that is not only technically robust, but quickly and easily deployed. And for peak productivity, new code management tools and practices must be useful not only to the team as a whole, but to all individual developers. Typically, tools that build upon existing tools and practices are most successful with developers. By minimizing new concepts, developers can quickly familiarize themselves with new tools and put them to use. And since every development site is different, the code management solution also must serve as a long-term platform upon which a team can develop and refine their own specific code management tasks. SPARCworks/TeamWare FEATURES As one of the cornerstones of SunPro's development environment strategy, team-oriented development tools are a fundamental component for software developer productivity. The new workgroup product from SunPro, SPARCworks/TeamWare, provides users with five code management tools which are especially well-suited for networked development teams: VERSIONTOOL. Tracks versions of ASCII and binary files. Compatible with the UNIX SCCS version control utility, this tool graphically displays a file's modification history. Lets developers easily identify, view, compare, check out, edit, and check in source files. Supports both serial and concurrent check out of files. CHECKPOINT. Tracks complete assemblies of source files. Creates a "checkpoint" file which registers all source files for a given software release (directory and subdirectories). Given a previously created checkpoint, reproduces prior versions of source files. CODEMANAGER. Graphically tracks and integrates software projects and releases. Provides team with graphical view of their software releases, integration and testing workspaces, and individual developer workspaces. Intelligently transfers source files between related workspaces and notifies developers when related workspaces are out of date or contain conflicting modifications. Manages workspaces which are distributed across loosely connected sites and/or disparate hardware platforms. Supports access control on workspace operations and automatic electronic-mail notifications triggered by workspace operations. FILEMERGE. Graphically and interactively compares and merges files. Displays two files side-by-side, indicating where lines have been added, deleted, or modified. Compares files against each other or a common reference file. PARALLEL MAKE. Slashes time to build large projects. Enhances performance of SPARCworks Maketool by executing build jobs in parallel on a single Solaris host. Best suited for multiprocessor servers, Parallel Make can also decrease build time on single processor machines. SPARCWORKS MANAGER. Unifies SPARCworks tools by providing a single graphical interface to invoke, control, and coordinate a development session. (SPARCworks Manager and FileMerge are also included with other SPARCworks products; they are included with SPARCworks/TeamWare for convenience.)
