It addresses the backup requirements of data centers and networked workstations which have been ignored by traditional UNIX(R) backup facilities: the requirement for safe, online backups with minimal impact on users; backup speed; and the ability to conveniently backup and restore large volumes of data on the network; and ease-of-use. Online: Backup 2.0 is the new revision of the Online: Backup Copilot(TM) 1.0 product for the Solaris 2.x operating environment, and is compatible with the current software and tape format for easy migration. FEATURES AND BENEFITS -Features- -Benefits- ========== ========== On-line backup * Higher system availability for users Automatic, unattended network backup * Lower operator costs, backing up large quantities of data becomes manageable Tape library management/on-line index * easier, quicker restoration of files Format compatible with standard dump * easy use/migration of existing tapes Multiple device support * system admins can run backups on several tape drives at the same time Remote operator monitor capability * system admins can monitor dumps on all machines simultaneously from any workstation or terminal New Features in Online: Backup 2.0: - Level III Internationalization - Support for the EXB-10i 8mm stacker (stacker mode only) - Improved ease of use for configuration and installation - Automatic configuration of OBLU 2.0 clients for easier administration - Greatly enhanced error reporting - Greatly improved individual file recovery performance with 5GB 8mm tapes HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE CONSIDERATIONS ------------------------------------ Online: Backup 2.0 is available for all SPARC(R) systems running Solaris 2.x. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS --------------------- Q. Will Online: Backup Copilot 1.0 still be available? A. Yes. Version 1.0 is required for Solaris 1.x (SunOS 4.1.x) systems. Online: Backup 2.0 runs only on Solaris 2.x systems. Q. I understand that I can backup Solaris 2.x clients and servers using Online: Backup 2.0, but what about all my clients running SunOS 4.1.x? Can I back these up with Online: Backup 2.0? A. Yes. Clients running SunOS 4.1.x can be backed up with Online Backup 2.0. However these Clients must be running Online: Backup Copilot 1.0. Q. Can I use my existing Online: Backup Copilot 1.0 "dumpex" configuration to backup Online: Backup 2.0 clients? A. No. If you have a mixed network of hosts running Online: Backup 2.0 and Online: Backup Copilot 1.0, you must run "dumpex" from an Online: Backup 2.0 host. Q. Will Online: Backup 2.0 work with the Exabyte EXB-10i 5-GByte tape stacker ? A. Yes. SunSoft has fully tested the EXB-10i stacker with this software. However SMCC cannot perform any service on or assist with the operation of EXB-10i stackers, as these are not SMCC price listed devices. Q. If we use both Online: Backup and Online: DiskSuite(TM), can we backup greater than 2 GByte filesystems on multiple tape drives (given DiskSuite's support for up to 1 Terabyte file systems)? A. Yes. Filesystems can be as large as you want; backups can span tapes and tape drives. Online: Backup 2.0 has End-Of-Tape processing capabilities to support multi-tape dumps and multi-dump tapes. Q. Can we use multiple tape drives with different formats? A. All tapes used on the same backup job must use the same tape format to avoid confusing the tape library manager. Different tape drives could be used for different backup configurations. Q. How many 8mm tape drives can a customer have on a single system? A. We tested on 2 or 3 physical drives and with as many as 12 virtual drives. There is no known limit (beyond physical connectivity). Q. Will the Online: Backup manual be available online? A. Yes, PostScript files of the manual are on the product CD-ROM for printing or viewing via Pageview. Q. Where is Online: Backup 2.0 installed and how is it priced? A. Online: Backup 2.0 is installed on the systems where the backup is run -- the systems with the tape drives -- and on client systems with disks that will be backed up. SMCC pricing charges only for the systems you want to back up to, i.e. the systems with the tape drives. There is no charge for the client systems being backed up. Q. Is there a site license or a University license? A. No Q. Can I do backup on non-Sun servers, and backups from non-Sun Clients? A. Neither is supported at this time. Q. What about upgrades for Online: Backup Copilot 1.0 customers? A. Customers with support contracts should automatically receive Online: Backup 2.0. An upgrade package is available for customers who do not have a support contract and wish to upgrade from Online: Backup Copilot 1.0 to Online: Backup 2.0. (See pricing section below.)
