---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash SunDBE 1.3 SunFLASH Vol 49 #2 January 1993 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Now you can take even greater advantage of SuperSPARC(TM) processor based SPARCstation(TM) 10 and SPARCserver(TM) 6x0 Series systems for database application with SunDBE(TM) 1.3 software! This latest release of Sun's industry-leading database accelerator extends the advantages of SunDBE 1.2 to all SPARCservers running the Solaris(TM) 1.1 operating environment. ****************************************************************************** Announcing a new release of the Sun(TM) Database Excelerator(TM) (SunDBE 1.3) -- Enhances the performance of Informix(R), INGRES, Oracle(R), and Sybase(R) on SPARCserver systems running the Solaris 1.1 environment. -- Preserves Sun's database price/performance -- Helps leverage SuperSPARC based SPARCstation 10 and SPARCserver 600MP systems running database applications on Solaris 1.1 ****************************************************************************** Sun Database Excelerator 1.3 (SunDBE 1.3) extends Sun's price/performance advantage in the UNIX database server market with support for SuperSPARC based SPARCstation 10 and SPARCserver 600 MP systems. SunDBE 1.3 software on Solaris 1.1 maintains the database performance gains of SunDBE 1.2, and includes new features for further improving throughput and performance. Database server customers on Solaris 1.1 will experience dramatically improved performance with SunDBE 1.3. Maximum throughput can be expected to increase by up to 50% while supporting up to four times as many concurrent users. SunDBE FEATURES AND BENEFITS ---------------------------- SunDBE 1.3 software supports all DBE 1.2 features on Solaris 1.1, including: -- Improved memory management -- Support for more users -- Tuned asynchronous I/O -- Increased throughput SunDBE 1.3 also includes the following new features: - Further enhancements to memory management for the sun4m architecture by the implementation of Intimate Shared Memory (ISM). This feature allows users attached to the same memory segment to share the virtual memory mappings, greatly reducing the memory requirements for page table entries. - Improved support for large multi-threaded dbms server configurations such as Sybase, Ingres and Gupta through the support of an increased number of file descriptors (2048). HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE CONSIDERATIONS ------------------------------------ SunDBE 1.3 is available for all SPARC(R) systems running Solaris 1.1 operating environment only. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS --------------------- Q. When should I purchase of SunDBE 1.3? A. SunDBE 1.3 is recommended for customers running INGRES, Sybase, Oracle, or Informix on SPARCservers running the Solaris 1.1 environment. Q. Will SunDBE 1.3 improve the performance of other UNIX databases, such as Gupta? A. Probably, but they haven't been tested. Q. Will SunDBE 1.3 work with the SPARCengine(TM)? A. Yes for the SPARCengine 1, 1+, 2, 3XX and 10 since these boards are the CPUs for the SPARCstation 1, 1+, 2, SPARCserver 3XX and SPARCserver 10 respectively. It will not work with the SPARCengine 1E due to its requirement for a special version of SunOS(TM). Q. How does the performance of SunDBE 1.3 compare with SunDBE 1.2? A. SunDBE 1.3 software on the Solaris 1.1 operating environment should provide the same level of performance increases that SunDBE 1.2 did on SunOS 4.1.2. The advantage is that it now makes these performance improvements available on all Solaris 1.1 platforms including the SuperSPARC based SPARCstation 10 and SPARCserver 600MP systems. Q. Will SunDBE 1.2 still be available? A. Yes. If the customer is running SunOS 4.1.2, then the customer should still purchase SunDBE 1.2. SunDBE 1.2 will not appear on the next Reseller and End User price lists, but will remain quotable until March 26, 1993, and orderable until May 28, 1993. Q. What about upgrades for SunDBE 1.2 customers? A. Customers with support contracts should automatically receive SunDBE 1.3. Sun customers without a support contract should purchase SunDBE 1.3 as they upgrade to Solaris 1.1 or purchase systems which run only Solaris 1.1. There is also an upgrade package available for those customers who do not have a support contract and wish to upgrade from SunDBE 1.2 to 1.3.
