The Sun(TM) SPARCcenter(TM) 2000 data center server running Oracle7 achieved raw performance throughput greater than any other UNIX system running in a non-clustered configuration. The SPARCcenter delivered 734.10 transactions per second and $5,346 per tpsA, using a configuration that included 10 SuperSPARC(TM) processors and running the Solaris(R) 2 symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) distributed operating environment and Oracle7 Cooperative Server database. These new results demonstrate that the SPARCcenter 2000 delivers better performance at a lower cost of ownership than all other systems in its class. The full benchmark environment consisted of a network of 7,400 terminals connected to 10 SPARCserver(TM) 10 Model 51 front-end machines in a client-server configuration. No competing server delivers comparable performance at this price level. Previously, the best performance was achieved by the Pentium-based NCR 3555 at 713 tpsA at $5,983 per tpsA; the Hewlett Packard 9000 Series 890 delivered 710 tpsA and $6,767 per tpsA; the Sequent Symmetry S2000 delivered 618 tpsA and $11,006 per tpsA and 1,002 tpsA at $9,313 per tpsA in a clustered mode. As previously announced, this Sun system has also set performance records in NFS(R) file server performance (the LADDIS benchmark), system computational performance (the SPECrate benchmark) and multiuser throughput (the AIM III benchmark). In addition, these new TPC-A results follow the ones recently released for SMCC's mid-range server, the SPARCserver 1000, which premiered in May and is now being shipped in volume. The SPARCserver 1000 delivered 400.47 transactions per second and $5,068 per tpsA. The SPARCcenter 2000 is SMCC's mainframe-caliber server that offers all the benefits of UNIX, open systems, and client-server computing, namely: ease of use, multiprocessing, accessibility and scalability. The SPARCserver 1000 and the SPARCcenter 2000 both utilize scalable multiprocessing design, which allows customers to increase processing power simply by plugging in processor modules. The SPARCserver 1000 has up to eight processors, while the SPARCcenter 2000 can accommodate up to 20 processors. The TPC-A benchmarks are just one result of an ongoing joint engineering effort between SMCC, SunSoft, SunPro and Oracle to provide the industry's best performance of Oracle7 on Sun's SMP systems. In addition, the TPC-A benchmarks were achieved using the SPARCworks(TM) Professional C 2.0.1 integrated development environment from SunPro, which includes the SPARCworks toolset and SPARCompiler(TM) C. SPARCworks Professional C is optimized for the SPARC(R) hardware architecture, and SunPro engineers have worked with the Oracle team to improve performance. TPC-A, the TPC's first benchmark approved in November 1989, is representative of on-line transaction processing (OLTP) environments. TPC-A is a complete system benchmark and simulates an environment in which multiple users, using terminals, PCs or workstations, are accessing and updating a common database over a local or wide area network.
