These packages -- the Sun Enterprise Toolset(TM) -- were originally developed to assist Sun Microsystems in its own migration to client-server computing. These tools and technologies are available in a variety of packages. Each includes a software core that is sold "as is" and can be customized, based on an organization's specific requirements. There is a minimum set of services that cover the transfer of technology to the purchaser, while additional services can be developed for customizing the software core. The five new Sun Enterprise Toolset packages include: * SunDANS(TM) (Distributed Administration of Network Software) -- Allows an organization to automatically distribute and manage software products across any network -- no matter how many nodes -- eliminating a variety of problems, including inconsistent versions of software, improper installation, unavailability of desired applications and difficulty in installing upgrades. * SunRAI(TM) -- Sun Remote Application Interface (RAI) allows direct, unmodified communication between UNIX(R)-based applications and those located on legacy systems. For example, SunRAI will allow a client-server RDBMS and an IBM DBMS to automatically synchronize transactions. This capability extends the life of legacy systems during the migration to a client-server computing model. Transactions are transmitted in a secure, prioritized and properly sequenced order. In addition, the package contains complete recovery facilities to address network or SunRAI component failure. * Sun Paperless Reporter(TM) -- Provides a secure general-purpose electronic distribution and viewing system for online information such as financial and manufacturing reports. Sun Paperless Reporter allows reports originating from Sun(R), IBM(R) mainframe or a variety of other systems to be automatically distributed to local file servers, where they can be viewed by authorized end users. This eliminates the need to keep volumes of hardcopy reports on file, and ends delays that occur with manual distribution. * Sun ConsoleServer(TM) -- Allows the system administrator to control multiple, local and remote systems from a single location in the data center. It logs a history of console messages and permits the access of console functions from remote locations. * Sun DataCenter Scripts(TM) -- A set of programs that help automate and customize complex data center adminstration tasks. The collection handles three areas: system administration collection; and Sybase and Oracle administration collection. Sun began its internal rightsizing efforts in 1989. In a little more than three years, Sun has doubled in size to a $4.3 billion company while reducing its information technology expenses from seven to four percent of sales. In doing so, Sun has reduced its capital commitment cycle from 274 to 139 days; added almost $1 billion to its balance sheet; improved inventory turns from below four to more than 11; and increased revenue per employee from $175,000 to $348,000. "During our own internal rightsizing efforts, we developed a set of enabling tools and technologies that solve a variety of problems in an efficient manner," said Bill Coleman, vice president and general manager of SunIntegration Services. "In relating our own experiences to customers, we discovered there was a need for these software and services packages, and we've decided to make them available. Our approach is to empower the customer through the transfer of technology. Now, users in a variety of markets who are rightsizing can benefit from our experience." The five packages are available immediately in the United States to system integration customers only. Beginning January 1, the packages will be generally available in the United States. Support and customization is provided through SunIntegration Services. These packages will be available worldwide during the next year. In addition, SunIntegration Services will expand its Sun Enterprise Toolset family during the next year. SunDANS ranges in price from $200-$250 per user for a network of approximately 500 users; SunRAI is approximately $20,000 per application-to-application connection; Sun Paperless Reporter ranges in price from $750 per user for a 50-user configuration; Sun ConsoleServer is approximately $4,500 per administration console; a Sun DataCenter Scripts source code license ranges in price from $10,000-$18,000. Prices vary depending on usage and include transfer of technology.
