The relationship involves two major components: NetLabs and SunConnect will support common interfaces to their respective platforms; and the NetLabs/DIMONS 3G* network management platform technology (formerly called NetLabs/OverLord) will be licensed for incorporation into the SunNet Manager(tm) platform and future SunConnect(tm) management products. SunConnect and NetLabs said that although each will pursue separate development of the management technology - providing distinct products with different user interfaces and tools - they intend to adopt and maintain a common set of interfaces, including application programming interfaces (APIs), console interoperability protocols and information models. SunConnect, NetLabs The agreement was signed last month between the industry's number-one and number-three network management vendors (in terms of volume shipments, according to International Data Corp.), who together represent more than 50 percent of the UNIX. network management market. Their new relationship will result in products which let network administrators create a cooperative management environment that reflects how their organizations work -- as cooperating, coordinated communities -- whether with peer-to-peer or hierarchical relationships or both. Denis Yaro, SunConnect vice president and general manager, said, "As a result of this agreement, SunConnect and NetLabs customers will be able to manage enterprise resources and use the same third-party applications, with both companies' platforms working cooperatively. This will tremendously expand the market for independent software vendors, who now can write applications for both vendors' platforms using a single set of APIs. And users will reap the benefit of being able to buy applications for both platforms from more than 135 SunConnect and NetLabs partners." Roselie Buonauro, NetLabs vice president of marketing, said, "This agreement will make DIMONS 3G technology the most pervasive in the network management industry, and will significantly broaden the market for our family of platform-independent, distributed applications. At the same time, NetLabs can maintain its strategic focus on developing and enhancing its leading-edge platform and application technology." SunConnect products incorporating the NetLabs management technology will be available beginning in the second half of 1994. The products will provide compatibility for existing SunNet Manager applications, ensuring a smooth migration path for the installed SunNet Manager base of more than 12,000 units. NetLabs/DIMONS 3G was announced in February 1993 as the first truly distributed network management solution. Unlike conventional platforms, where platform and applications run tightly coupled on a single hardware system, DIMONS 3G frees the applications from system-specific communication; the platform kernel resides on one system, acting as central coordinator for applications located elsewhere on the network. DIMONS 3G is Network Management Forum kernel-compliant and architected for conformance with the OSF's Distributed Management Environment (DME).
