The cooperative management product line includes an advanced object-oriented management platform, a synchronized data repository and Structured Query Language (SQL) reporting capabilities. The cooperative management product offerings from SunConnect solve the problems users are faced with today such as unintegrated management tools coupled to one hardware system. These tools run on platforms that operate independently, often resulting in duplicated or unsynchronized data. The independent nature of today's management systems also makes it difficult for management teams to work together. The cooperative management product line allows users to leverage objects physically located on other platforms as if they were local, and it delivers a central data repository that synchronizes enterprise-wide management information. The products use an open set of interface protocols and Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) freeing them from vendor-specific limitations. SunConnect ENCOMPASS "The Network and systems management marketplace is evolving from proprietary, product-specific systems to platform-based solutions. SunConnect defined the initial market for platform-based systems, spawning many platform imitators," said Denis Yaro, vice president and general manager of SunConnect. "Helping customers develop management systems that are a part of the network, not a result of it, is what cooperative management is all about. Our cooperative management product line represents an evolution in management systems and we hope to see many more imitators with open, cooperative management offerings." Initial offerings in the cooperative management product line include ENCOMPASS, SunConnect's internal code name for its advanced object-oriented management platform, Cooperative Consoles(tm), a synchronized data repository, Cooperative Reporting(tm), a management platform extension with SQL reporting capabilities and SunNet Manager(tm) 2.2, a systems-based network management platform. ENCOMPASS ENCOMPASS is an API-independent management platform based on an object-oriented data repository. It is compatible with applications written for the SunNet Manager platform, and with applications written for the NetLabs/DIMONS 3G platform (formerly named NetLabs/OverLord). The cross-platform compatibility automatically results in a larger market for Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) who develop for one platform or the other. The ENCOMPASS platform's flexible data repository, which includes technology licensed from NetLabs, Inc., enables advanced application integration, and provides a secure environment where multiple users can manage an entire enterprise from any point on the network. This frees applications from the constraints of system-specific communication or location. ENCOMPASS and NetLabs/DIMONS 3G will share a common set of interfaces, including APIs, console interoperability protocols and data repository. The products are distinct and provide different user interfaces and tools. Although they will be developed separately by their respective owners, SunConnect and NetLabs intend to maintain the common interfaces and APIs. SunConnect ENCOMPASS SunNet Manager and NetLabs/DIMONS 3G represent the industry's number-one and number-three network management vendors respectively (in terms of volume shipments, according to International Data Corp.). Together, the companies represent more than 50 percent of the UNIX. network management market. Cooperative Consoles Cooperative Consoles is a management platform extension that provides SunNet Manager customers with an enterprise-wide shared network topology repository. It also allows customers to use a common repository to receive and store events and traps sent by other network and system resources enabling operators and administrators to work on fault and performance management issues as a team. Cooperative Reporting Cooperative Reporting is a management platform extension that provides SunNet Manager and ENCOMPASS customers with a relational database management system (RDBMS), formatted reports, report generation tools, and a data aggregator. Automated database administration functions enable customers to easily use the RDBMS for storing, retrieving and processing configuration and event information using SQL or integrated report generation tools. Cooperative Consoles and Cooperative Reporting incorporate TRENDsystems(tm) technology licensed from Desktalk Systems, Inc. SunNet Manager SunNet Manager continues to be the top selling open systems-based network management platform in the world, with more than 13,000 packages shipped to date. It is based on a protocol-independent, distributed management architecture and offers an open and intuitive graphical topology display and a complete set of applications for automated fault isolation, diagnosis, network monitoring and control. In addition, SunNet Manager provides distributed manager/agent services, open APIs for developers, and a site license for SNMP agents. There are currently more than 100 SunNet Manager Partners of which 70 are shipping products today.
