IBM will offer Wabi on R/S 6000 systems. Sun and HP will also offer Wabi on their respective workstations. Also, IBM has entered a development agreement with SunSelect. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Contact Beth Byer at (508) 442-0271 Wabi software will now be available on majority of UNIX workstations CHELMSFORD, Mass. -- August. 24, 1993 -- SunSelect, the PC integration business of Sun Microsystems, Inc., today announced that it has licensed Wabi(TM) software to IBM for use on IBM's RISC System/6000(TM) workstation family. Wabi will allow RISC System/6000 workstations to run Microsoft(R) Windows applications at full performance without the need for MS-DOS(R) or Microsoft Windows itself. "IBM represents a milestone for Wabi," said Dave Power, general manager and vice president of SunSelect. "Wabi will now be offered on the majority of RISC workstations shipped worldwide, as well as with the major UNIX implementations for the PC. Wabi is fast becoming the de facto standard for running Microsoft Windows applications in the UNIX environment." With the IBM agreement, Wabi will be available to customers of three of the largest UNIX(R) workstation vendor -- IBM, Hewlett-Packard, and Sun Microsystem -- whose combined shipments last year accounted for the majority of all UNIX workstations and servers shipped. In addition, Wabi will be licensed by the leading UNIX operating system vendors, including SunSoft and UNIX System Laboratories (USL). SunSelect also announced today that IBM has entered into a development agreement for future releases of the Wabi technology. Under the agreement, IBM has licensed technologies to SunSelect that the two companies will integrate with Wabi. The agreement calls for both companies to make significant investments in ongoing enhancements to Wabi functionality and performance. As a result, Wabi receives the technical backing of key intellectual property creators in the technology sector: Sun, IBM, and UNIX System Laboratories. USL announced its co-development agreement with SunSelect on May 5, 1993. The Wabi software enables UNIX system users to run Microsoft Windows applications right out of the box. Wabi accomplishes this by translating the function calls made by Microsoft Windows programs into those recognizable by X Windows. As a result, Microsoft Windows applications become an integral part of the UNIX desktopto a degree not possible with traditional emulation technology. Users can cut and paste between the two environments, resize and move windows, and even run Microsoft Windows applications on X terminals in a distributed environment. "Wabi's approach allows Microsoft Windows applications to take full advantage of IBM's advanced RISC architecture and the power of our 32-bit AIX/6000(TM) operating system," said Bill Filip, IBM vice president and president, Advanced Workstations and Systems. "Wabi will allow our customers to run Microsoft Windows programs on the RISC System/6000 with impressive performance." Wabi supports the most popular Microsoft Windows applications on the market, representing about two-thirds of all Microsoft Windows applications sold. These include Lotus 1-2-3 for Windows, Lotus AmiPro(TM), Microsoft Word for Windows, Microsoft Excel(R), Microsoft PowerPoint(R), Microsoft Project for Windows, WordPerfect(R) for Windows, Harvard(TM) Graphics for Windows from Software Publishing Corporation, Aldus(TM) PageMaker(R), PROCOMM PLUS(TM) for Windows from Datastorm Technologies, Inc., CorelDRAW!, Paradox(R) for Windows and Quattro Pro(TM) for Windows from Borland(R) International, Inc., as well as the complete set of Microsoft Windows 3.1 accessories.
