With this announcement, SMCC(TM) firmly entrenches itself as the industry leader in multiprocessor systems, performance, flexibility/upgradability and low cost of ownership. Multiprocessor systems: MP provides benefits NOW! You don't have to wait until an application has been threaded to take advantage of MP. The benefits include significant increases in application performance as well as tremendous productivity gains. Initial results from tests currently under-way show applications running from 15% to 40% faster on a dual processor SPARCstation 10 without modification (i.e. non-threaded code). Some applications, including a leading EDA app for example, run significantly faster than 40% better. Performance: The SPARCstation 10 Model 512MP is faster than ANY competitive workstation in both SPECrate_int92 and SPECrate_fp92! Flexibility/Upgradability: Nothing matches the SPARCstation 10's combination of modularity, multi-processing cabability, headroom for growth, upgradability and expansion slots. Cost of Ownership: Based on total system hardware and software costs plus the cost of maintenance, the SPARCstation 10 is considerably less costly than similar competitive systems. To use thicknet you will need to PURCHASE an OPTIONAL AUI adapter cable (X981A). AVAILABILITY - SPARCstation 10 Models 30, 30LC, 40, and 41 are all available for immediate shipment - SPARCstation 10 Models 51, 402MP, and 512MP will begin shipping in June - SPARCstation 10 Model 54 will begin shipping in Q1 FY94 QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS --------------------- Q. Why did the numbering scheme change with the two new multiprocessing systems? What do the numbers mean? A. The two digit approach did not allow for multi-processing systems without SuperCache (like the Model 402MP). The first digit in the number indicates processor speed, the higher the number, the faster the processor. The second number indicates whether or not the system has SuperCache. The number one means yes, a zero means no. The third digit indicates the number of processors. So, a Model 402MP means a two-way MP system based on 40MHz SuperSPARC without SuperCache. Q. Why all the emphasis on multiprocessing/multithreading desktops? A. Multiprocessing and multithreading are two key technological battlegrounds for the 90s. The fact that all SPARCstation 10s are capable of MP/MT is a key competitive advantage for Sun. The rest of the industry is trying to catch up. Q There are more systems without SuperCache. How does a customer know if can benefit from it and when they won't? A. Most applications work very well with SuperCache. However, in some cases, it makes sense for a customer to pay less and buy a SuperCache-less system like the Model 30, 40 or 402MP. Q. Are there any changes to current configurations? A. Yes, the Model 41 P43 versions (424-Mbyte disk) will not be price-reduced and are being transitioned. So the better buy is clearly a 1.05-Gbyte configuration. In addition, not only will the Model 52 be replaced by the Model 512MP but, the SuperSPARC processor will be 50MHz rather than the 45MHz originally announced. Q. Why isn't the Model 54 becoming a Model 514MP? A. The Model 54 remains unchanged except for the price reduction. It will ship as a 4-way 45MHz SuperSPARC system so, there was no need to change the product name. Q. Is the Model 40 upgradable to a Model 402MP? Is a Model 51 upgradable to a Model 512MP? A. The Model 40 is upgradable to a Model 402MP but, initial Model 40 systems will require a two-for-one module swap in order to upgrade to an MP system. This is because initial Model 40 systems will be based on an earlier version of the SuperSPARC processor that is not capable of multiprocessing. Upgrade details will be sent out at a later date. Eventually, Model 40 systems will be upgradable to Model 402MP by simply adding another Model 40 processor module. The Model 51 is upgradable to a Model 512MP by simply adding a Model 51 module x-option and running Solaris 2. Q. Will there be a Model 40 Module X-option? A. Yes, but it will not be available immediately for reasons discussed in the previous Q&A. Q. Why does the SPARCStation 10 Model 51 come standard with 64MB of RAM instead of 32MB like the other uniprocessor SPARCstation 10s? A. Most customers that buy the high-end uniprocessor system buy at least an additional 32MB of RAM. So, we chose to bundle it. Q. What kind of SIMMS will be used in the 64MB configurations of the Models 51, 512MP and 54? A. They will all be configured with four 16MB SIMMS. Q: Why has Sun elected to offer a one year warranty on the SPARCstation 10? A: This change in warranty is driven primarily by the improvement of overall product reliability. Hardware costs and failure rates are decreasing and our products are becoming less complex due to fewer discrete components. This in turn makes our products easier to service. Because of all these factors, Sun is pleased to pass on to our customers the added benefit of a one year return-to-factory warranty on these new products.
