And our new SunSpectrum(SM) worldwide customer support program provides precisely the right level of support you need for each area of your enterprise--from minimal backup assistance to complete support for mission-critical environments. Easy pricing and administration Unlike other vendors' programs that require customers to pay a separate fee for each configuration and peripheral device supported, SunSpectrum charges a single fee that covers the entire system, including all peripheral hardware, Solaris(R) system software, and other Sun software packages. Representing a whole new concept for support programs, SunSpectrum means less confusion and fewer administrative burdens for you. In fact, with SunSpectrum, you get the most flexible and streamlined ordering, pricing, and service program in the industry. Rather than forcing you to predict your needs from the outset of the contract, SunSpectrum lets you determine your response times at the time of your call, according to the demands of the problem--whether urgent, serious, or not critical. Choose your level SunSpectrum support is available in four building-block levels, ranging from total enterprise support to backup telephone and replacement part services. All include Sun's EarlyNotifier service that provides periodic alerts of bugs, workarounds, and solutions from Sun's Solution Centers. For each level, there is a single fee per system model, regardless of the configuration: Platinum(SM), SunSpectrum's premier level, offers support for complex, mission-critical environments where maximum availability is essential. Key features include a 99% server uptime guarantee and on-site technical reviews, coaching, and training as well as extended coverage hours on traditional product support. Gold(SM) provides pro-active support through value-added services, such as personal technical account support and a self-paced education library. Traditional product on-site and phone support, with extended coverage hours is also provided. Silver(SM) provides basic on-site and telephone support at a low cost. Customer-defined priority setting is included in this program as well as in the Gold and Platinum programs. Bronze(SM) is a highly affordable solution for self- sufficient customers who primarily need back-up assistance and parts replacement. Worldwide availability of SunSpectrum support will be in a phased implementation. Be sure to check with your local Sun support representative regarding the availability of these services in your area. Specific programs, features, and coverage hours may vary by country. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Easy upgrades: work better with a better machine! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Remember how much more you could accomplish when you started working on your current computer? Now you can make the move to an even higher level of productivity. Whether you're working on a non-SPARC(R) Sun(TM) system, a SPARC Sun system, or a system from HP/Apollo, Sun is making it easier and more affordable than ever to trade in or upgrade. Move up to the powerful SPARCstation(TM) 10 family Now you can go directly to a SPARCstation(TM) 10 system--and receive substantial trade-in credit for your current Sun system. It's a cost-effective entry into the powerful, expandable SPARCstation 10 family. If you're moving from a SPARCstation 1 or 1+, a SPARCstation 2, or a SPARCstation IPX(TM), a simple chassis swap will earn you your credit on the aggressively priced upgrade. Or, for your Sun-3(TM), you can have a full system upgrade to a SPARCstation 10 Model 30. There's no learning curve to increased power, because you get to keep your familiar working environment, including disks, data, and applications. Everyone making the transition can realize new technology innovations, such as built-in ISDN, plug-in SPARC modules, and built-in multimedia functionality, including a microphone and speaker box. Trade up from your HP/Apollo platform to a SPARCstation Take advantage of the special prices we're offering for trading up from HP/Apollo systems to the industry's most popular workstations. Due to strong customer requests, we've extended the HP/Apollo Migration Program and added direct paths to the high-performance SPARCstation 10 models. One reason this program has been so successful is Sun's commitment to ensuring a smooth transition from DOMAIN to Solaris/SPARC. Our special focus on DOMAIN users is designed to make it as easy as possible for companies to move ahead with the advanced technology of SPARC/UNIX(R) applications and processing power. Other vendors, including Mentor Graphics and Atria, are complementing our efforts to help DOMAIN users make the move to Solaris/SPARC. Upgrade your data center with the SPARCcenter(TM) 2000 series Sun's upgrades to the SPARCcenter(TM) 2000 series let you cost-effectively move up to our powerful new data center server. Augmenting your mainframe for minicomputer prices, the SPARCcenter 2000 delivers industry-leading throughput for compute-intensive applications. And our new SunSpectrum program can provide exactly the support you need. So if you currently use a rack server--whether the SPARCserver(TM) 690MP, SPARCserver 490, or SPARCserver 390--an "enclosure exchange" upgrade will bring you the performance and expandability of the SPARCcenter 2000. We designed these upgrades with maximum investment protection in mind. For example, you can migrate--or inexpensively upgrade--modules, and even upgrade your IPI disks to Sun's newest 2.1-Gbyte Differential SCSI disks. And of course, the modular design of the SuperSPARC(TM) processors ensures a continually affordable upgrade path to next-generation technology. Put a SPARCstation LX on your desk We've made it easy to upgrade to Sun's newest economical desktop technology--and to Solaris 2.1, the industry-leading distributed computing environment. If you're currently working on a SPARCstation IPC(TM), SPARCstation 1, or SPARCstation 1+, a simple chassis swap will put the nimble SPARCstation LX--complete with its accelerated 8-bit color graphics, built-in innovations, and Solaris 2.1--on your desk. From SPARCstation SLC(TM), SPARCstation ELC(TM), Sun- 3, and Sun386i(TM) desktop systems, a full system upgrade will get you where you want to go. Continuing this tradition, we're now offering a set of sophisticated but easy-to-use code management tools: SPARCworks(TM)/TeamWare. With SPARCworks/TeamWare, your networked development team can realize peak productivity in developing multiplatform applications on Solaris 1.1 or Solaris 2.x. You can work on several releases at the same time. Integrate changes from multiple developers. Reuse code. Build project components in parallel. All with a simple, intuitive drag-and-drop interface that saves your whole team lots of time and hassle. More than five hundred developers throughout the world are already using SPARCworks/TeamWare tools in settings ranging from small group projects to sophisticated multisite and multiplatform development projects. Users are finding SPARCworks/TeamWare to be very easy to learn and use because it builds on standard UNIX tools and practices. Providing easy parallel development and project integration, graphical source code management, and accelerated software build, SPARCworks/TeamWare is a set of six independent but integrated tools: --VersionTool tracks and graphically displays a file's complete modification history --CheckPoint creates a bill-of-materials for all source files for a given software release --Code Manager graphically tracks and integrates software projects and releases --FileMerge graphically and interactively compares and merges files --ParallelMake executes build jobs in parallel on a single Solaris host --SPARCworks Manager unifies and manages these and all other SPARCworks tools (see accompanying story on SPARCompiler(TM) products) SPARCworks Manager unifies SPARCworks tools by providing a single graphical interface to invoke, control, and coordinate a development session. Pumping up programmer productivity: SPARCworks/SPARCompiler 2.0.1 Supporting both Solaris 2.x and Solaris 1.1, this new release of SPARCworks/SPARCompiler software development tools provides a powerful, graphical, integrated development environment that increases your productivity and enhances your capabilities--no matter which Solaris operating system you're using. You'll find it particularly useful if you're transitioning between the two. If you're using a SuperSPARC-based machine, SPARCompiler 2.0.1 improves application execution performance 8-12 percent as compared to the previous 1.1 and 2.0 compiler releases, on Solaris 1.x and Solaris 2.x respectively. For your convenience, the new release provides all SPARCworks/SPARCompiler products on a single CD-ROM. You simply purchase the passwords to the products that meet your individual requirements: only compilers--C, C++, FORTRAN, or Pascal; only the six SPARCworks development tools-- SPARCworks Manager, SourceBrowser, Debugger, Analyzer, FileMerge, and MakeTool; or a SPARCworks Professional package that combines the compiler of your choice with the six SPARCworks development tools. Two new configuration options are available. The "100 Pack" configuration allows large scale developers to purchase, use, and support SPARCworks/SPARCompiler products more easily and affordably than in the past. The new "Slim Pack" configuration lets developers purchase a complete, cost- effective, single-user package that includes CD-ROM, license, and on-line documentation. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Networking news ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Continuing to help people around the world link up for greater productivity and effectiveness, Sun has introduced three new networking products. Network Terminal Server An economical and flexible solution for your rightsizing efforts, Sun's new Network Terminal Server lets you preserve your existing equipment investments as you move to a client- server environment. Each Network Terminal Server lets you connect 64 terminals or other serial peripheral devices-- scanners, modems, printers, PCs, and more--into a UNIX system host-based LAN that includes any SPARCserver or SPARCcenter computers running the Solaris operating environment. By connecting multiple Network Terminal Servers, thousands of users can be placed anywhere on the network. Through the product's TCP/IP support, users can simultaneously connect to multiple systems with a variety of network protocols. With its low price per port, simultaneous hardware and modem flow control, and full suite of network management tools, the Network Terminal Server provides a complete solution for your serial peripheral needs. In addition, a dedicated high-speed parallel port for connecting printers or plotters provides shared printer/plotter functionality. The Network Terminal Server can be managed by SunNet Manager(TM), the industry's leading SNMP network management solution. Network security is provided through data encryption, audit trails, and user password. With its high reliability and ability to interface to multiple servers on a network, the Network Terminal Server enables you to move mission-critical applications into your client-server environment. SunLink(R) PPP 1.0 A cost-effective alternative to dedicated routers, SunLink(R) PPP 1.0 provides transparent TCP/IP connectivity between LANs and remote sites at speeds of up to 2.048 Mbps. Adhering to the Internet point-to-point protocol (PPP) standard, SunLink PPP can interoperate with other vendors' systems running the standard PPP and also supports load- sharing between Sun systems. It includes a SunNet Manager agent for easy network management. SunLink Frame Relay 1.0 If you have remote office locations requiring affordable, point-to-point communication at high speeds, SunLink Frame Relay is an ideal solution. It features transparent IP connectivity over public or private Frame Relay networks and supports cost-effective data transfer at high speeds of up to T1/E1. A built-in SunNet Manager agent lets you monitor frame relay connections to achieve better management and control of your network. The product's support for RFC 1294 means that Sun systems can communicate with other vendors' equipment that also supports RFC 1294. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Solaris CMW 1.0: the high-trust operating system ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- With the Solaris Compartmented Mode Workstation (CMW) environment, Sun has adapted the industry's most powerful UNIX operating system to deliver the security protections that sensitive information requires. Unlike standalone trusted systems based on a mainframe and terminals or PCs, Solaris CMW makes it possible to join all computing systems into a single distributed trusted computing base. People can share information across an entire enterprise while security is maintained. The security features don't hamper ease of use or performance. You can even choose from a wide variety of software packages, including today's most powerful database management systems, personal productivity tools, and desktop publishing applications. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Solaris speaks your language ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- European Solaris 2.1 is now available in English, French, German, Italian, and Swedish. Enabling more people to easily learn and use Sun products, the European Solaris 2.1 Media Kit consists of a multilingual CD-ROM disc and an Installation Guide localized for single- or multiple- language installations. The CD-ROM disc includes a localized operating system, graphical user interface, DeskSet(TM) tools, software message files, spot help files, and AnswerBook system software on-line documentation. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- In Short ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The latest release of the Sun Database Excelerator(TM), SunDBE(TM) 1.3, dramatically improves the performance of Informix(R), INGRES, Oracle(R), and Sybase(R) systems running in the Solaris 1.1 environment. Maximum throughput can be expected to increase by up to 50 percent over the prior release while supporting up to four times as many concurrent users. Online: Backup 2.0 addresses the backup requirements of data centers and networked workstations that have been ignored by traditional UNIX backup facilities. It provides safe, on- line backups with minimal impact on users. Online: Backup 2.0 is the revision of the Online: Backup Copilot(TM) 1.0 product for the Solaris 2.x operating environment and provides for an easy migration. OpenWindows(TM) Developer's Guide 3.0.1 is the first version available on the Solaris 2.0 operating environment. It enables software engineers to graphically and interactively design, edit, and test an OPEN LOOK(R) user interface without writing a single line of code. New features in this version include integration with the SPARCworks developer tools through ToolTalk(R), on-line AnswerBook(R) documentation, and new desktop integration widgets. Now supporting Solaris 2.1, SunLink FDDI/S 2.0 allows a SPARC system to connect to an FDDI LAN for high network availability and throughput for time-critical, bandwidth-intensive applications. Adhering to the FDDI standard, SunLink FDDI/S 2.0 consists of a single-slot SBus card, driver software, and SunNet Manager proxy agents for easy FDDI network management. The powerful, easy-to-use ShowMe(TM) conferencing solution software is now available at substantial per-user price discounts through High-Volume Multiuser License Packs. Single-user and ten-user license configurations remain unchanged. Sun continues to offer aggressive prices on a wide variety of mass storage and memory products. Thoroughly tested for compatibility and performance, Sun brand mass storage and memory is the best value in the industry. No other major systems vendor offers such competitive pricing.
