These new mass storage products will bring more power and performance to desktop SPARCstations(TM) and SPARCserver systems(TM). Unveiled today were the 4.2-gigabyte Multi-Disk Pack, the smallest, high quality 4 plus gigabyte desktop storage device on the market, and the 5-gigabyte 4mm Tape Desktop Backup Pack, the fastest, lowest-cost DAT (digital audio tape) package available from any major Unix computer vendor. In addition, SMCC has combined these two peripherals with a CD-ROM drive in the new File and Database Server Option Packs, available in three models. The Multi-Disk Pack is an extremely compact subsystem ideal for desktop workgroup servers and power user workstations. It provides multiple gigabytes of storage capacity in a small, and quiet desktop enclosure. The new peripheral consists of four 1.05 gigabyte high-performance disk drives all in the same footprint as SMCC's SPARCclassic and under six inches in height. This mass storage drive was specifically designed by SMCC to be quiet, small and fit well in an office environment. According to Ed Turner, SMCC's director of peripherals product marketing, "Until now, adding 4-gigabytes, 8-gigabytes, or more disk capacity to a desktop workstation or server required a large, expensive and noisy deskside pedestal or rack. SMCC's new mass storage solutions can easily accommodate these higher capacities in a footprint with the dimensions of a sheet of paper, with a significant reduction in noise, and at a very low cost." SMCC's first 4mm tape offering is the 5-gigabyte Tape Desktop Backup Pack, a high capacity Digital Data Storage drive with built-in data compression capabilities. This new drive utilizes advanced DAT technology and costs 40 percent less than SMCC's own 5-gigabyte 8mm tape drive. The 4 mm version is an attractive alternative to 8mm tape technology, and offers a typical data transfer rate of over 900 Kilobytes/sec -- twice as fast as most other 4mm DAT drives. Three new Database and File Server Option Packs which conveniently bundle these new disk storage and tape backup products with a CD-ROM drive at an even lower cost than if these peripherals were purchased separately. All the peripherals needed to transform any desktop system, such as a SPARCserver 10 computer or SPARCclassic server, into a workgroup fileserver or database server, are included in these packages. The option packs come in 3 models, and includes the mass stroage products mentioned above, as well as a 644 Megabyte Desktop SunCD(TM) Pack. It takes up 10x9 inches of desk space and is less than a foot tall. Pricing And Availability All peripherals mentioned above are available now. The U.S. list price for the 4.2 gigabyte Multi-Disk Pack is $8,800. The 5 gigabyte, 4mm Tape Desktop Backup Pack lists for $2,500. The Database and File Server Server Option Packs list prices range from $5,500 for the File Server Option pack, to $13,500 for one of the Database Server Option Packs.
