---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash NEW CODE MANAGEMENT TOOLS FROM SUNPRO ADDRESS CRITICAL NEED FOR WORKGROUP DEVELOPMENT TOOLS SunFLASH Vol 47 #35 November 1992 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- SPARCworks(TM)/TeamWare and ProWorks(TM)/TeamWare tools allow teams to work in parallel for maximum productivity MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -November 30, 1992-SunPro, a Sun Microsystems, Inc. business, today introduced SPARCworks(TM)/TeamWare and ProWorks(TM)/TeamWare suites of code management tools which ease software version control, release integration, and project build. The new tools, which augment SunPro's family of SPARCworks and ProWorks development environments, speed software development by allowing individuals and teams to work in parallel for maximum productivity. SPARCworks/TeamWare and ProWorks/TeamWare products are aggressively priced and are available for systems based on the SPARC and x86 architecture and running the Solaris operating environment. Over five hundred developers throughout the world are already using SPARCworks/TeamWare tools in settings which range from small group projects to sophisticated multi-site and multi-platform development projects. The toolset-which builds upon standard UNIX tools and practices-has proven to be extremely easy to learn and use. "SPARCworks/TeamWare tools allow developers and their teams to manage source files far more effectively than before," said Jon Kannegaard, vice president and general manager of SunPro. "The product fills the void between basic UNIX source control utilities and expensive, complex Configuration Management Systems-it's exactly what software developers want." Brings Team Productivity to SPARCworks and ProWorks Development Environments SPARCworks/TeamWare tools empower teams of software developers by allowing them to easily distribute and coordinate their work in networked development environments. For peak productivity, development teams can work on multiple releases at the same time, integrate changes from multiple developers, re-use code, and build project components in parallel. Speeds Critical Code Management Tasks SPARCworks/TeamWare tools provide developers with powerful graphical tools for: * Visually inspecting and managing multiple versions of source files * Capturing project source file configurations for later retrieval * Graphically integrating and managing project releases * Visually merging source files and coordinating concurrent source file changes * Building project components in parallel The tools support the powerful "copy-modify-merge" development paradigm which SunPro pioneered in 1988 with its Network Software Environment (NSE) product. The paradigm allows developers to structure their software projects for maximum parallelism-teams can visually coordinate multiple project releases and concurrent source file changes, even across multiple development sites or development platforms. The tools graphically display projects and support both rapid transfer and re-use of source files via simple "drag and drop" operations. Access control and electronic mail notifications support team-specific practices. "SPARCworks/TeamWare tools enable two or more engineers to work simultaneously on the same code, then merge it into a single source," said John DeHority, a senior software engineer with the Kodak Digital Systems Center, a part of Kodak's Electronic Imaging Platform Center. "Given the heavy competition and pressure to market in this industry, that's a tremendous advantage." Delivers Unmatched Flexibility for Multi-Site and Multi-Platform Development SPARCworks/TeamWare tools easily handle large or growing development projects which are spread across multiple development sites or disparate hardware platforms. The tools allow teams to track and update source files across loosely connected development sites. Through standard NFS and X window system utilities, developers using non-Solaris development platforms can also gain full access to the toolset. "SPARCworks/TeamWare tools gave us the efficiency we needed to integrate code from three locations into a single, viable solution," said Stephen Speirs, systems development engineer in Sun Microsystems' Information Technology Systems Development Group. "Given the size and scope of this project, that's a considerable feat." Pricing and Availability The suggested retail price for SPARCworks/TeamWare and ProWorks/TeamWare code management tools in single quantity is U.S. $995. Quantity discounts are available for 10, 25, and 100 licenses; purchase of 100 license packages lower the price to U.S. $600 per license. All product configurations include on-line AnswerBook(TM) documentation and flexible network licensing. Operation with SPARCworks or ProWorks professional development environments is recommended. SPARCworks/TeamWare and ProWorks/TeamWare tools will be available through authorized SunPro resellers worldwide. Volume shipments of SPARCworks/TeamWare tools to SunPro resellers will begin in January 1993; ProWorks/TeamWare tools will begin volume shipments in mid-1993. Both products support version 2.0 or later of the Solaris operating environment. To ease the transition from Solaris 1.0 to Solaris 2.0, SPARCworks/TeamWare tools also support the Solaris 1.0 operating environment.
