Networking disparate systems together and making operations transparent to users presents special challenges to most businesses. Today, Sun Micrsystems delivers PC networking solutions through PC-NFS. PC-NFS is Sun's DOS implementation of our ONC open systems distributed computing environment and the NFS distributed computing file system. It allows those who use PC's on multi-vendor hardware and operating system networks to share resources transparently in the familiar DOS syntax. With more than 500,000 installed systems, PC-NFS is the leader in PC-based heterogeneous nerworks. This guide represents more than 150 software and hardware products that support and operate in PC-NFS nerworks. Scan through the pages and you'll find a wide variety of software applications-desktop publishing, computer-aided design and manufacturing, database management, and terminal emulators-all specially developed for PC-NFS by independent software vendors. You'll also find several X Window System and Microsoft Windows applications and more than 90 Ethernet boards that support PC-NFS. We also cover leading-edge hardware products, such as diskless PC's and boot proms. We think you'll find this guide helpful. And to ensure its usefulness, we'll update it as new products become available. Scott McNealy Chairman and CEO Sun Microsystems, Inc. PC-NFS is the DOS implementation of Sun's ONC, the set of protocols and services that form the industry standard platform for distributed computing in multivendor environments. The premier product for sophisticated network-based information sharing and management over TCP-IP, PC-NFS offers true transparent file access and resource sharing, allowing PC users to work in the familiar DOS syntax. PC-NFS LifeLine Mail and Backup brings electronic mail and backup to PC-NFS. Through its support of the SMTP ( Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) and POP ( Post Office Protocol) standards, menu-based LifeLine Mail allows users to exchange mail between hundreds of computers with diverse hardware architectures and operating systems. LifeLine Backup is a network resource and management facility that enables users to back up local and distributed files to a storage device anywhere on the network with a single request. PC-NFS Advanced Telnet, jointly developed by Sun Microsystems and terminal emulation products leader Walker Richer& Quinn, gives PC-NFS users terminal emulation capabilities for IBM, Digital, and Tektronix hosts. Advanced Telnet has a range of sophisticated features that deliver easy and accurate emulation, such as the ability to manage up to three host sessions simultaneously and switch between PC and host sessions with a single keystroke. The third add-on application, PC-NFS Programmer's Toolkit, is one member of Sun's family of software development tools that lets developers write distributed applications for ONC environment. The Toolkit contains a set of libraries for developing applications for multi-vendor workgroups including PC's and PC LANS. Applications built with the PC-NFS Programmer's Toolkit can connect DOS systems to over 90 ONC implementations (including SunOS, UNIX, Ultrix, VMS, MVS, VM, and A\UX), allowing an ever increasing number of users to benefit from the rich features of PC-NFS. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ For information send mail to info-sunflash@sunvice.East.Sun.COM.
