---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash Sun Gains Momentum In The Worldwide Education Market SunFLASH Vol 28 #22 April 1991 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Universities in Brazil, Japan, Poland and United Kingdom Move to Sun's SPARC Platform MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- April 29, 1991 -- Sun Microsystems announced today that universities in Brazil, Japan, United Kingdom and Poland recently purchased Sun workstations and servers to be used in a broad range of applications, from research and instruction to administration. These recent wins underscore the rapid worldwide growth of Sun systems in academia. Sun has computers installed in more than 1,100 academic institutions worldwide with more than half of these institutions located outside the United States. Sun Wins Bid Against Major U.S. Computer Vendors in Brazil After an intense bidding war between major U.S. computer companies, Sun was selected by the Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Cientifico e Tecnologico (CNPq) for the purchase of 526 desktop workstations to be donated to universities throughout Brazil. CNPq is the national council for technological development. Among the factors that favored Sun was its education software promotional program, ScholarPAC(TM), which offers reduced pricing on Sun's unbundled software. Since mainframes and PCs have been the primary computing platform for most of the universities in Brazil, the decision to purchase SPARC(R) /UNIX(R) workstations is a significant win for vendors who promote non-proprietary computers. Japanese Universities Select Sun Servers and Workstations The University of Tokyo recently added two SPARCservers(TM) to its installed base of more than 180 Sun SPARC systems. The new servers are being used by the laboratory of earthquake chemistry for research and analysis of earthquake data gathered from 12 sites within a 300-kilometer radius of Tokyo. Other departments at the university are using Sun systems for mechanical engineering, scientific research and instruction. Other recent wins in Japan include the Shibaura Institute of Technology and the University of Electro-Communication, both located in Tokyo, which have purchased a total of 40 SPARCstations(TM) to be used in the engineering and research departments. Sun Wins Major Contracts in Poland Sun was recently awarded a contract for the initial purchase of 50 Sun SPARCstations and SPARCservers by the prestigious Polish Academy of Sciences (Polska Academia Nauk) in Warsaw, Poland. These systems will be used by three institutions. The Institute of Technical Research will use them for theoretical and analytical mechanics, fluid mechanics, theory of plasticity, foil mechanics, behavior of new materials, and ultrasound applied in medical research and robotics. The Institute of Systems Development will perform research on management models, environmental models and computer science. And, the Physics Institute will use them for researching solid state physics, optics, electromagnetics, theoretical physics and superconductivity. Bradford University Centralizes Administrative Data Processing on Sun Bradford University, United Kingdom, selected a Sun SPARCserver 490 to run its central administrative data processing operations. The administrative functions at the university incorporate five elements, including student and staff records, physical resources and research and consulting business management. The university plans to perform all of these administrative functions on the SPARCserver, as well as use the system for information management.
