Electronic Libraries -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5.1 NeWSware Online marketing, sales, and technical support are now available for Sun's developers and resellers. Sun's Catalyst group offers an online support and information service that is one of the most comprehensive in the industry. Called NeWSware, this database search and electronic messaging system is being codeveloped by Sun and GE Information Services (GEIS). NeWSware is an easy-to-use tool that allows users to obtain information from Sun's databases over a local 2400+ baud modem connected to Sun workstations or servers. NeWSware conforms to the OPEN LOOK graphical user interface standard. It provides a hierarchical representation of folders and subfolders of the database for easy access to information. NeWSware properties sheets establish the parameters used during the NeWSware session. NeWSware provides access to multiple databases as well as different views of each database. Views and databases can be restricted to individual users or groups of users. It also features full text Boolean as well as specific keyword search in the database for easy access to information. An information retrieval form allows users to request information on a product or service described in the NeWSware database and can be used to collect vital marketing information and provide sales leads on prospective customers. The PostScript viewing engine built into NeWSware provides for WYSIWYG display of documents, using Sun's NeWS technology and the OpenWindows windowing system. Options are provided for printing documents retrieved on a PostScript laser printer and saving documents locally for later use. NeWSware can be used to distribute many types of documents, including PostScript, text, and binary. It allows communication with other NeWSware users by way of existing Sun e-mail systems. For further information, contact your local Sun customer service representative. 5.2 Sun Customer Service OSS: Online Support System With the Online Support System (OSS), Sun's Customer Service and Satisfaction Organization (CSS) offers its software service contract customers another way to get technical information. The Online Support System provides 24-hour access to a "bulletin board" where customers can retrieve timely Sun product information, an automated patch-request database that allows customers with software service contracts to order existing patches automatically, and the Online Bugs Database (OBD). For further information, contact your local Sun customer service representative. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chapter 6.
