SLIC is a SBUS card for the SPARCstation 1 and uses 1 SBus slot. Using the standard LocalTalk tap boxes, you have direct access to Macintoshes, Laserwriters etc. Even the SUN Laserwriter can support LocalTalk simply by reconfiguring the printer. The main advantage for using LocalTalk as medium for printer access is its speed and ease of use. The LocalTalk protocol is about 12 times as fast as the standard 19200 Baud serial connection to the printer. LocalTalk is truly 8-bit transparent, thus the printing of bitmaps is allowed. Up to 254 subscribers are supported on the LocalTalk network, the SPARCstation can work as a printer-server for other UNIX systems to rout printer requests. In heterogenous networks both SPARCstations and Macintoshes can share the resource of laserprinters. Even more, the bundled software with SLIC supports a VT 320 terminal emulation on the Macintosh computers, acting as remote terminal to the workstation. SLIC comes with complete software support to use Laserwriters as postcript or ASCII printers in your UNIX-network, a terminal emulation and a printer-spooler program for the Macs. The software is delivered on diskette and simply installed as loadable driver module. Operating systems currently supported are: SUN OS 4.1, 4.03 So, in a brief - SLIC lets you + use your Laserwriter with your SPARCstation + use Macintosh as a network-terminal for your workstation + spool printfiles from your Macintosh The SLIC software supports + printing of postscript files on postscript printers with lpr + printing of ASCII files on postscript printers + terminal emulation for Apple Macintosh + routing between LocalTalk and EtherTalk networks SLIC is a joint development of HELIOS Software GmbH and PAC Technology GmbH of germany. With the addition of Helios Ethershare software (not included in the package) you can use the SPARCstation as a AFP fileserver, printserver, spooler, adminserver and Appletalk router. (IDE) announced today the availability of the C Development Environment. The C Development Environment is a combination of Software through Pictures, Saber-C, FrameMaker or Interleaf TPS CorePlus, and IDE training and consulting. IDE is also offering a new course, titled Designing and Re-engineering Structured Code, to help customers apply the set of tools together. This integrated solution, designed to support UNIX C software developers, is available immediately from IDE for Sun workstations and Digital DECstations. The C Development Environment is the first open solution from IDE, said company president Anthony I. Wasserman. Our plan is to combine Software through Pictures with other high quality, complementary software development tools to deliver a series of comprehensive, integrated environments that support users through the entire development process. The C Development Environment demonstrates the value and use of our open architecture, which will let us provide a growing set of solutions to software developers. According to Sesha Pratap, president and co-founder of Saber Software, We are very enthusiastic about our strategic alliance with IDE because of our mutual commitment to open solutions. By combining the Saber-C programming environment with analysis and design tools from IDE, IDE provides the most comprehensive open systems solution available today for UNIX C developers. The union of these complementary products ensures success because it solves many problems faced by software development organizations. Responding to Customer Demand The C Development Environment is a response to strong customer demand, said Ed Mueller, director of Applications Marketing at IDE. Customers asked us for integrated CASE environments supporting the entire software development process. Customers also wanted to purchase the environments from one vendor. The C Development Environment is the first in a series of solutions we plan to offer. Customer response to the C Development Environment on our preview seminar tour was enthusiastic, continued Mueller. We explained and demonstrated in detail how to use all the products together effectively. Software engineers realized the C Development Environment can help them to maintain existing systems as well as to create new applications. We have tailored separate solutions for information systems and real-time applications so customers will get exactly what they need. The seminars have already generated great demand for the C Development Environment all over the U.S. Customer Reactions Users familiar with Software through Pictures, Saber-C, and FrameMaker or Interleaf have praised the introduction of the C Development Environment. According to Mike Christieson, a project manager at OUConnor & Associates of Chicago, Illinois, a company that conducts proprietary trading of derivative finacial instruments: It is more and more important in todayUs market for third-party software development products to communicate with each other. Without tool communication, the real potential of a UNIX-based integrated development environment is not realized. For example, to be able to synchronize source code and design diagrams (e.g., reverse engineer from code to schema) with Saber-C and Software through Pictures, and at the same time automatically produce complete documentation with FrameMaker, is really meeting the needs of software developers. Steve Grady, a senior engineering manager at ADC Telecommunications of Minneapolis, Minnesota, added: Our direction for enhancing our maintenance capabilities and reducing our costs is to use Software through Pictures, Saber-C, and FrameMaker for the reverse engineering of our existing high- speed telecommunications applications. We are looking to IDE to provide us the glue that pulls all the pieces together. Pricing and Product Information The C Development Environment is a bundled configuration of Software through Pictures, Saber-C, FrameMaker or Interleaf TPS CorePlus, and IDE training and consulting. All the components of the C Development Environment are available from IDE. The single license price of Software through Pictures ranges from $5,000 to $21,000 depending on the configuration. Single license prices for Saber-C, FrameMaker and Interleaf TPS CorePlus are $2,495, $2,500 and $2,500 respectively. Software through Pictures is a multi-user, integrated CASE environment that supports requirements analysis, design, code generation and documentation of software systems for technical (real- time embedded/non-embedded) and commercial (information systems) applications. Software through Pictures supports standard structured analysis and design methods including Object-Oriented Structured Design (OOSD). Its open architecture allows Software through Pictures to be customized, extended, and integrated with other tools. Software through Pictures runs in a heterogeneous network of workstations and minicomputers from DEC, HP/Apollo, IBM, and Sun with X terminals, PCs, and Macintoshes as X11 servers. Saber-C is a powerful C programming environment that increases programmer productivity and improves software quality. Saber-C features include automatic static and run-time error detection, interactive workspace for early-stage testing and execution of code fragments, graphical program and data browsers, a customizable source-level debugger, and an incremental linker for fast edit-to- execute times. FrameMaker and Interleaf TPS are leading workstation publishing tools for producing technical documentation. FrameMaker is powerful, cost- effective, and accessible, providing full-featured word-processing, graphics, page and document layout, and book-binding tools for creating a wide range of publication quality documents. The Interleaf software product family provides fully integrated word processing, sophisticated graphics, business charts, automated tables, workgroup publishing, and document management capabilities. Both products can be used to document requirements, system design and code throughout the software development process. Training for All the Tools IDE Educational and Consulting Services group has developed a four day training course titled Designing and Re-engineering Structured Code in conjunction with the introduction of the C Development Environment. The first two days will cover Structured Design and Structured Programming with the last two days devoted to training on how to apply all the tools that comprise the C Development Environment together to design new applications and to maintain existing systems. IDE also offers custom integration consulting. One of the issues addressed by the C Development Environment is maintenance, said Michael P. Thoma, vice-president of Marketing at IDE. Currently 75% of development time is spent maintaining existing systems. The C Development Environment brings together a set of tools that can significantly reduce maintenance costs. Solving this widely recognized maintenance problem gives IDE a way to introduce CASE technology into a company during the maintenance phase, Thoma continued. Traditionally CASE has been used to develop new systems which represents only 25% of the software development market. Our new course is unique because it trains people how to use the C Development Emnvironment for maintenace as well as designing new systems. By providing a way to introduce CASE tools during the much larger maintenance phase, we can expand our potential market by a factor of three. Interactive Development Environments (IDE) IDE was founded in 1983 by Anthony I. Wasserman to develop and sell high quality, leading edge CASE software, support integrated CASE environments, and provide support, training, and consulting services to help customers be successful throughout their software development process. IDE is a privately held company with over 450 customers worldwide. IDE's headquarters is at 595 Market Street, 10th Floor, San Francisco, CA 94105. Phone: 1-800-888-IDE1.
