In addition, Sun has made a grant of approximately $7,600 to a non-profit organization in Scotland, where it recently opened a new manufacturing facility. The grants part of Sun's ongoing Corporate Contributions Program will support programs in education, job training and development, leadership development and business enterprise development. Sun issued its first grants in April 1990. Today's awards bring Sun's total contributions for the calendar year to nearly $646,000. Sun has donated a total of $169,409 to organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area. Sun awarded a grant of approximately $7,600 to the West Lothian Industry/Education Partnership, a project of West Lothian Enterprise in Bathgate, Scotland. The partnership is a three-year effort to involve educators and businesses in developing school curriculums that are more responsive to the needs of the Scottish economy. Earlier this month, Sun officially opened its third manufacturing and supply facility the first outside the United States in Linlithgow, West Lothian District, Scotland. "We're committed to extending our Corporate Contributions Program overseas," said Mark Vermilion, Sun director of corporate affairs. "About half of Sun's revenues come from outside the United States, and it is our intent to give something back to our communities, wherever we are located." Sun's Corporate Contributions Program was launched in January 1990 to support the economic improvement of emerging communities in the regions in which Sun maintains its largest operations. Organizations interested in receiving grants submit proposals to Sun, which are screened by a team of Sun employees that includes both management and non-management staff. The program follows the principles and practices for effective grant-making developed by the Council on Foundations, the governing professional organization for corporate and foundation philanthropy.
