NEW UPGRADE HIGHLIGHTS: SPARCstation 1/1+ to SPARCstation 2 The SPARCstation 1/1+ to SPARCstation 2 upgrade is a chassis swap and supports a major part of the customers' original investment. Specifically, these components can be used in the new system: monitor, frame buffer, Sbus cards, internal and external peripherals. The price is $6,995 for all SPARCstation 1 and 1+ configurations and comes standard with 16 mbytes of RAM. Performance improves from 12 MIPS (SS1) and 15 mips (SS1+) to 28.5 MIPS. SPARCstation 1 and 1+ GX to GS For customers needing advanced capabilities, including 3D solids modeling, Sun announces the new GS upgrade for SPARCstation 1 and 1+ customers. The GS upgrade includes the GS board, which requires 3 S-bus slots, a new 19" Sony Trinitron 76Hz monitor, and connecting cables. Customers return their GX frame buffer, color monitor, and cables. The GS upgrade allows customers that are currently using software designed for GS level performance to have a Sun solution for $9,995. CURRENT UPGRADE HIGHLIGHTS: Motorola and Intel-based desktops all have upgrade paths to SPARCstation 1+ currently in place. These upgrades offer the customer an affordable way to significantly improve performance while moving to Sun's industry leading SPARC architecture. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS Q. Can I use SPARCstation 1/1+ simms in SPARCstation 2? A. No. The simms in SPARCstation 2 run at 80 ns rather than the 100 ns in SPARCstation 1/1+. Q. Why isn't the upgrade a board-only swap? A. The internal layout of the SPARCstation 2 was changed in order to provide additional cooling. As a result, the SPARCstation 2 CPU board will not physically work in a SPARCstation 1/1+ chassis. Keep in mind that the upgrade allows the customer to migrate everything but memory so costs are minimized. Q. What configurations will be supported with this upgrade? A. Whatever the configuration of the SPARCstation 1/1+ becomes the configuration of the Sparcstation 2. All frame buffers migrate from SPARCstation 1/1+. Q. Will I be able to upgrade other desktops to SPARCstation 2? A. No. All Motorola and Intel-based desktops have excellent paths available to SPARCstation 1+. Q. Will there be and upgrade from SPARCstation IPC to SPARCstation 2? A. No. When an upgrade is created for SPARCstation IPC, it will be designed to take advantage of IPC's unique packaging and components. Upgrading from IPC to SPARCstation 2 would not be cost effective for the customer at this time. Q. Is there a SPARCstation 1 and 1+ GX to SPARCstation 2 GS upgrade? A. No. Customers will need to purchase both the SPARCstation 2 and GS upgrades. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Sunflash is an electronic mail news service from Sun Microsystems, Ft.
