A recent article analyzed "which standard is the standard?" root covers the middle ground of that which is both and neither network or system like YP and NFS administration. root is also noted for its humor and pen and ink illustrations: featuring regular cartoons like "the data center" the humorous antics of the operations staff and the adventures of the journal's mascot, root the dragon. Most issues are general in content but there are occasional special issues like a printer special issue a few months back and the next issue a network special issue. All versions of UNIX are featured, BSD and derivatives (SunOS, ULTRIX ...), System V and XENIX. Scripts are usually shown in both Bourn and C shells. All size computers are featured from PC-AT types to mainframes but workstations, networked systems and servers get particular attention. root is starting its third year of publication. root was started a few years after the publication of "UNIX System Administration" by the books coauthors.
