At 21 SPECmarks, this compact new series of systems delivers nearly twice the speed of Sun's top-of-the-line desktop, the SPARCstation 1+, yet still squeezes all the electronics into the small "pizza box" CPU package introduced with the first SPARCstation in 1989. The SPARCserver 2 offers fast application throughput and large disk capacities required for file, database and multi-user environments. 23.10 Introducing SunOS 4.1.1 - SunOS 4.1.1 includes support for new hardware, major performance enhancements, convenience features and bug fixes - First SunOS release to include OpenWindows - Includes all of SunOS 4.1 features - SVR4 development tools, standards, internationalization and security - Fully binary compatible with SunOS 4.1 and 4.1 PSR A - Default SunOS transitions to SunOS 4.1.1 on November 16 SunOS 4.1.1 maintains binary compatiblity with SunOS 4.1 and 4.1 PSR A allowing it to be considered a micro release, however it also includes significant performance enhancements, support for new hardware and new convenience features in addition to over 250 bug fixes. 23.11 SBus Developers List This list of SBus related products is from Sun's SBus product manager. It is posted to SunFlash every couple of months (or so). - johnj The current list of SBus developers has grown to 135 products or services from 63 vendors. 35 new additions have been made since the last time the list was published. 23.12 Free: OpenWindows Portable Source Code Sun announced today that the source code for its OpenWindows(TM) application development environment will now be available free of charge (cost of media only -- $995). This means that hardware and software developers will now have a cost-effective way to incorporate OpenWindows -- including the easy-to-use OPEN LOOK(R) graphical user interface -- into applications developed or ported to many platforms from different vendors. 23.13 root The Journal of UNIX SysAdmin As many SunFlash readers are System Administrators, I thought that there would be some interest in this description of root. -johnj "root The Journal of UNIX System Administration" is a technical journal dedicated to system and network administration and system programming. 23.14 New 207-Mbyte disks 207MB disk drive for all desktops at 104MB prices 100% increase in capacity 20% better seek times 60% increase in maximum sustained transfer rate Sun announces today that it will offer the 207MB 3.5-inch disk drive as an Internal and External X-Option. The 207-Mbyte disk drive offers significantly better price/performance for the same price as the 104-Mbyte disk drive. The 207-Mbyte drive doubles the capacity, reduces seek times by 20% and increases the maximum sustained transfer rate by over 60%. 23.15 Using the 150Mb 1/4 inch tape drive This is from an internal article that I thought would be of general interest. If you are unsure which tape drive you have in a machine, try the command: mt -f /dev/rst0 stat Change rst0 as appropriate. - johnj) Due to a large number of questions on the new 150MB tape drive I thought it would be a good idea to get out some basic operating info on the beast. ( This is not intended as a full technical overview, but rather as a help to those using the drive under real conditions). 23.16 4.x Diskless Boot Procedure I have received a number of technical articles from Tony Brooks, a Sun engineer.
