-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SunOS 4.1 Release Announcement SunFLASH Vol 15 #13 March 1990 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Announcement Messages Important Release Notes Ordering Information Unbundled System Software Documentation 4.1 SOURCE -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- > Announcement Messages < -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "SunOS 4.1 is Industry's Premier UNIX Software Development Platform" SunOS 4.1 was announced at Uniforum in Washington DC on January 23rd. SunOS 4.1 adds significant new functionality and support for international standards, as well as offering customers a clear migration path to UNIX System V Release 4.0. System V R.4 is the new operating system standard developed by AT&T, Sun, and UNIX International. SunOS 4.1 is source code compatible with System V R.4, so that applications written today on SunOS 4.1, which follow the SunOS to SVR4 Compatibility and Migration Guide, will only require a recompile to execute on any System V R.4-based computer. SunOS 4.1 is binary compatible with Sun's previous operating system release, SunOS 4.0.3. Thus the huge catalog of SunOS-based applications, including more than 1,500 SPARCware applications for SPARC-based computers, will run on SunOS 4.1 without modifications. SunOS 4.1 offers many new capabilities and reflects serveral hundred thousand manhours of testing, performance tuning, and bug-fixing. The new release is completely compatible with POSIX 1003.1 and FIPS 151-1, which are standards frequently required by large corporate and government users. SunOS 4.1 is also fully compliant with the X/Open Portability Guide Release 2 (XPG2) and has received X/Open branding. In addition, it conforms to System V Interface Definition, Issue 2, while offering source-level compatibility with system V R.4. SunOS 4.1 will be shipping to customers in April 1990. An update of the SunOS-SVR4 Compatibility and Migration Guide and the SunOS 4.1 Release Report will be arriving in the Sales office literature centers in February. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- > Important Release Notes < -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CHANGES AND KEY INFORMATION 1) SunOS 4.1 media will be available in a single international version, that is, it does not include encryption. There will be a separate encryption kit that will serve all Sun-3 and SPARC-based systems. The SunOS media and encryption kit will be available as 1/4" and 1/2" tapes for all these systems as well as in diskette form for the SPARCstation 1. 2) There will be no combination tape and doc packages. 3) Documentation will include binders. The documentation with tabs inserted, will be shrink-wrapped into the appropriate binders, off the rings. The cost of the Full Documentation Set will be $600. Documentation subsets have been priced proportionally. There will only be one version of Full Documentation for both SPARC- and Motorola- based systems. 4) SunOS 4.1 media is priced at $350 to accomodate anticipated "no-charge feature tapes. There will be five architectural versions: 1) Sun-3 68020, 2) Sun-3 68030 (sun3x), 3) Sun-4 and SPARCstations 330 and 370, 4) SPARCstation 1 (sun4c), and 5) SPARCserver 390 and 490 (PSR A). PSR A will be available 1 month after 4.1 FCS. 5) 4.1 source purchases will include no charge deltas, that is, customers purchasing 4.1 or 4.1PSRA source may order the other version at no charge. Source prices have been raised to account for this. 4.1PSRA source includes source for the SPARCserver 390 and SPARCserver 490. The 4.1 source is for all Sun-3 and all-other SPARC-based systems including the SPARCstation 1. **Note** Source customers will require an AT&T System V Release 3.2 or later source license. 6) Upgrades to SunOS 4.1 will be structured in the same manner as the new product. Therefore, there will be no combined media and doc package. Only a full upgrade will be offered, as 4.1 requires a full re-install for everyone, and the documentation is new. Customers already on support contracts will automatically receive updates to 4.1. There will be a follow-on document describing per-incident upgrade pricing and software support pricing. 7) All of the latest versions of Sun's unbundled software products have been verified to operate on SunOS 4.1 software with a few exceptions. Please check with your Sun Sales Rep if you have any concern about specific unbundled software products. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- > Ordering Information < -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- End User & OEM Pricelist as of 4.1 FCS | System | System | System | Encrypt.| Encrypt.| Encrypt.| | S/W | S/W | S/W | Kit | Kit | Kit | | 1/4" | 1/2" | diskette | 1/4" | 1/2" | diskette| | Domestic | Domestic | Domestic | Domestic| Domestic| Domestic| |or Export |or Export |or Export | Only | Only | Only | |(No Docs) |(No Docs) |(No Docs) |(No Docs)|(No Docs)|(No Docs)| ----------------|----------|----------|----------|---------|---------|---------| For | SS2-07 | SS2-08 | SS2-13 | | |SS2-E-11 | SPARCstation 1 | $350 / A | $350 / A | $350 / A | | | $50/ A | Only | | | | | | | ----------------|----------|----------|----------| | |---------| For all SPARC- | | | | | | | system Series | | | | | | | (Except | SS1-07 | SS1-08 | | | | | SPARCstation 1 | $350 / A | $350 / A | | | | | and SPARCservers| | | | | | | 390 and 490 | | | | | | | ----------------|----------|----------| | SX-E-05 | SX-E-06 | | For SPARCservers| SPA-07 | SPA-08 | | $50/ A | $50/ A | | 390 and 490 | $350 / A | $350 / A | | | | | ----------------|----------|----------| N/A | | | N/A | For Sun-3: | SM3-07 | SM3-08 | | | | | 68030 Based | $350 / A | $350 / A | | | | | Systems | | | | | | | ----------------|----------|----------| | | | | Systems | | | | | | | For Sun-3: | SM2-07 | SM2-08 | | | | | 68020 Based | $350 / A | $350 / A | | | | | Systems | | | | | | | ----------------|----------|----------|----------|---------|---------|---------| Full System Software Documentation Set and Binders SX-09 (Does not include media or Desktop SPARC Owner's Set) $600 NOTES: 1.
