March 21, 1990 Sun Microsystems, Inc., and International Data Group reported today the sale of Sun's SunTech Journal quarterly magazine to IDG Communications/Peterborough, a wholly owned subsidiary of IDG. Started in late 1987, the SunTech Journal covers technology, products, and applications relating to Sun Microsystems. Sun's vice president of marketing, Ed Zander, said, "We're delighted to have IDG become the publisher of SunTech Journal . With IDG's publishing expertise, we feel that the Journal will rapidly expand its readership and increase its frequency." Roger Murphy, president of IDGC/Peterborough, further stated, "As the leader in computer-related publications, IDG is pleased to become the publisher of the No. 1 magazine covering the leader in the workstation market." In announcing the purchase, Murphy appointed computer publishing industry veteran Jim McBrian as publisher of SunTech Journal and Roger Strukhoff, editorial director of IDGC/P, as editor and associate publisher. SunTech 's founding editor and publisher, Mark Hall, will act as a consultant to the magazine. "We intend to continue producing the award-winning publication that readers and advertisers have come to expect," said Jim McBrian. He also stated that the most immediate enhancements will include an increase of frequency to bimonthly and the addition of new Sun users to the magazine's readership as they enter the market. SunTech Journal was first published in January 1988 as a quarterly technical magazine serving the growing number of Sun workstation users. In June 1989, the publication won a coveted Maggie award from the Magazine Publishers' Association and in October 1989, received its Business Publications Audit (BPA) approval and membership.
