-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- AGFA COMPUGRAPHIC TO FEATURE OPEN LOOK IN PRODUCTS FOR SPARC SunFLASH Vol 15 #7 March 1990 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WILMINGTON, Ma, --March 5, 1990-- AGFA Compugraphic today announced that it will feature the intuitive OPEN LOOK(TM) graphical user interface in its commercial publishing software for high-performance SPARCstation(TM) workstations made by Sun Microsystems. Products offered by AGFA Compugraphic merge text and graphics in an electronic or photographic master document that is used to print a variety of materials, from brochures to magazines. The company will unveil its first OPEN LOOK products at the DRUPA exhibition on April 27, 1990. OPEN LOOK is a sophisticated, yet easy-to-use interface designed by AT&T and Sun, based on technology licensed from Xerox Corp., the originator of the concept of modern user interfaces. OPEN LOOK gives diverse applications a common "look and feel" through consistent graphical metaphors, pop-up windows and point-and-click mouse controls. "With OPEN LOOK, our customers get the ease of a personal computer along with the power of a UNIX(R) workstation," said Harry Dahl, vice president of input systems at AGFA Compugraphic. Besides being a leading user interface for UNIX, OPEN LOOK has been chosen as the interface for UNIX System V Release 4, the industry standard. One particular advantage of OPEN LOOK to AGFA Compugraphic is the fact it runs on top of Sun's X11/NeWS Window System. X11/NeWS is based on the PostScript imaging language; Agfa Compugraphic utilizes PostScript fonts in its products. "Our customers will be able to see on the screen exactly what will be printed," said Dahl. AGFA Compugraphic is a division of Agfa Corporation, the imaging company of Bayer USA. AGFA Compugraphic is one of the world's leading suppliers of electronic and photographic pre-press systems, type and font products, phototypesetting materials, computer graphics output systems, and reprographic and processing equipment. Through its other divisions, Agfa Corporation manufactures and markets medical diagnostic imaging systems (AGFA Matrix Division) and magnetic tape, motion picture film, and consumer and professional photographic products (AGFA Photo Division). Agfa Corporation, which is headquartered in Ridgefield Park, N.J., employs more than 5,000 people and has sales of approximately $1 billion. Agfa Corporation is part of Bayer USA Inc., the U.S. management holding company of Bayer AG, West Germany.
