-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- UNISOL SHIPS JAPANIZED VERSIONS OF SUNWRITE, SUNPAINT AND SUNDRAW IN JAPAN SunFLASH Vol 15 #6 March 1990 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SAN RAFAEL, Calif. --March 12, 1990-- Island Graphics Corporation and Sun Microsystems, Inc. announced today that Unisol Corporation of Tokyo will begin shipping Japanized versions of SunWrite(TM), SunPaint(TM) and SunDraw(TM) in Japan beginning April 1. Unisol translated the products into Japanese. SunWrite, SunPaint and SunDraw utilize the easy-to-use OPEN LOOK(TM) graphical user interface. Unisol will license the products in Japan through its distribution channels. Unisol is owned jointly by Fuji Xerox and Sun Microsystems. Island Graphics originally created the office publishing products with Sun Microsystems, and since their introduction in February 1989, they have become the best-selling UNIX(R) office software on Sun workstations. "Japanese engineers and office professionals who have needed to do desktop publishing have been forced to choose between limited PC-based word processing and a few very expensive technical publishing programs," said Michael Takahisa, director of the marketing and sales department for Unisol. "We're offering an affordable middle solution -- we've brought Kanji and Kana characters to SunWrite, SunPaint and SunDraw." "We believe that the Japanized versions of SunWrite, SunPaint and SunDraw will enjoy the same success that they had in their first year in the English language," said Dan Remer, Island's president. SunWrite is a WYSIWYG word processing and page layout program that provides tools for creating memos, letters, newsletters and reports. SunPaint is a raster graphics editor that lets users edit scanned images, and create original paintings. SunDraw is a vector graphics editor that provides tools for creating diagrams and illustrations. SunPaint and SunDraw share a common clipboard with SunWrite, letting users cut and paste Sun rasters and EPS files between programs. Pricing for the Japanized SunWrite, SunPaint and SunDraw will be approximately the same as the English versions. They run on the same hardware as the English versions--the Sun-3(TM), Sun-4(TM), and the SPARCstation(TM)--and they require Sun's Japanese Language Environment (JLE) to support Japanese characters.
