---------------------------------------------------------------------------- SUN AND MENTOR GRAPHICS SIGN $300 MILLION SPARC SYSTEM CONTRACT SunFLASH Vol 18 #17 June 1990 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mentor Graphics Will Endorse OPEN LOOK Graphical User Interface MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. --June 12, 1990-- Sun Microsystems today announced that Mentor Graphics, the leading supplier of electronic design automation (EDA) systems, has agreed to purchase $300 million worth of SPARC(TM) computers over the next three years. The systems, with Mentor Graphics software, will be sold to customers throughout the world. Mentor Graphics announced earlier this year that its entire line of software would be made available on Sun workstations, including its EDA, CASE, technical publications and mechanical design products. "We have been very selective in choosing a workstation partner who shares our commitment to delivering the broadest and most advanced EDA solutions to customers," said Tom Bruggere, chairman and CEO of Mentor Graphics. "By adding strong support for Sun's growing line of SPARC-based workstations, Mentor Graphics products now run on 80 percent of the UNIX(R)-based workstations being sold today." As part of the agreement, Mentor Graphics' Sun-based products will utilize the OPEN LOOK(TM) graphical user interface in the future. OPEN LOOK, designed by Sun and AT&T, is an intuitive interface that is part of Sun's standard window system. "SPARC-based systems have become the hardware platform of choice for EDA applications, with 95 percent of EDA vendors offering products for SPARC," said Scott McNealy, Sun's president and CEO. "Mentor Graphics' endorsement of our SPARC/UNIX/OPEN LOOK solution makes this the de facto standard for EDA." Before the agreement with Sun, Mentor Graphics sold its software exclusively on systems from Hewlett-Packard/Apollo. While Mentor Graphics will continue to resell H-P/Apollo hardware, SPARC systems are expected to account for a sizeable percentage of its hardware offering. Sun Orders Mentor Graphics IC Software Sun also announced that it will purchase $2.2 million of Mentor Graphics software for SPARC systems, which will be added to Sun's internal EDA environment. Initially, Sun will use these tools in the development of complex integrated circuits for future workstations. Mentor Graphics IC design products, obtained through the aquisition last January of Silicon Compiler Systems--now the company's Silicon Design Division--are currently available on Sun systems. The remainder of the products will be available in early 1991. Mentor Graphics Corporation of Beaverton, Oregon, is the leader in worldwide EDA sales, with revenues of $443 million over the last 12 months. In addition to its corporate offices, Mentor Graphics has sales and support offices in 51 locations worldwide. Sun Microsystems, Inc., headquartered in Mountain View, Calif., is a leading worldwide supplier of network-based distributed computing systems, including professional workstations, servers and UNIX operating system and productivity software. ### SPARC is a trademark of Sun Microsystems, Inc.
