---------------------------------------------------------------------------- XEROX SIGNS $200 MILLION RESELLER CONTRACT WITH SUN FOR SPARC COMPUTERS SunFLASH Vol 19 #24 July 1990 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. --July 25, 1990-- Xerox Corporation has signed a contract expected to be worth about $200 million over the next several years for volume purchases of Sun's SPARC(R) computers for resale to Xerox customers, Sun Microsystems announced today. Included in the transaction is the just-introduced SPARCstation(TM) IPC, a low-cost color RISC workstation. "We selected Sun's SPARC family because of its open architecture and ability to support the client/server architecture Xerox has pioneered and is committed to pursue," said William C. Lowe, Xerox executive vice president, development and manufacturing. "This agreement puts the ease of use for which we are known on a powerful, industry-standard, inexpensive platform for a wider base of customers," said Wayland R. Hicks, Xerox executive vice president, marketing and customer operations. The contract is one result of a technology alliance made in October 1987 between the two companies under which Xerox and Sun agreed to work together to migrate the Xerox ViewPoint application software and Xerox Network Services environment to the SPARC architecture, ensuring compatability of new products with current Xerox systems. According to Scott G. McNealy, Sun president and CEO, "Since Xerox has a strong presence in the Fortune 1000, this agreement will further the success of our SPARC/UNIX(R) systems with commercial customers." Xerox Integrated Systems Operations, located in McLean, Va., and Sunnyvale, Calif., will incorporate SPARCstations as part of the foundation for its suite of application solutions in the integrated electronic publishing, image management, intelligent information access, multinational language technology and collaborative systems support areas. Sun Microsystems, Inc., headquartered in Mountain View, Calif., is a leading worldwide supplier of network-based distributed computing systems, including professional workstations, servers and UNIX operating system and productivity software. ### SPARCstation is a trademark of Sun Microsystems, Inc.
