This message details the following: * Contents * Positioning * Order numbers and pricing CONTENTS OF DESKSET 1.0 FOR SUNVIEW: The DeskSet is more than just a collection of applications. It is an environment. The Environment-- Sun's DeskSet provides a graphical interface to many UNIX commands, allowing novice users to access the power of this operating system without having to know crytic commands. Based on the OPEN LOOK (TM) graphical user interface, DeskSet tools have a consistent look and feel and are easy to master. Now the user can intuitively carry out operations with a "point and click" of the mouse rather than having to "remember and type" UNIX commands. DeskSet 1.0 represents files, programs and devices in the Sun desktop environment as icons that can be directly manipulated using the mouse. For example, you can point to the visual symbol of the directory you'd like to access, then move into that directory with a simple click of the mouse. If you want to print a file from that directory, simply drag the icon that represents the file to the print tool and release. The file is sent to the specified printer. This "drag and drop" desktop metaphor lets you work much more quickly and intuitively. For users and developers alike, these window-based tools dramatically simplify working with the power of the multitasking UNIX operating system. And because DeskSet 1.0 is based on SunView(TM), our customers can run it *today*, allowing them to smoothly transition to Sun's new desktop "look and feel." The Tool Suite-- DeskSet 1.0 for SunView includes the following productivity tools: - File Manager: Graphical representation of UNIX file system - Calendar Manager: Appointment and resource scheduling tool - Mail Tool: Allows sending and receiving of electronic mail and messages - Calculator: Perform algebraic, scientific, and logic functions - Print Tool: Allows printing of files with little knowledge of UNIX - Tape Tool: Allows running a tape drive without having to know UNIX - Text Editor: Mouse-based, ASCII text editor - Binder: Tool for defining methods bound to different types of files - Icon Editor: Allows user to create and edit icons and cursors - Snapshot: Allows user to take pictures of various parts of the screen - Performance Meters: Graphical display of system performance - Clock: Graphical display of current time The version of DeskSet that was shipped with OpenWindows 1.0 includes all of the tools listed above except for the Calendar Manager, Print Tool, Tape Tool and Calculator. These will be included with OpenWindows 1.1. POSITIONING: The DeskSet brings a consistent and easy-to-use environment to Sun desktops. It runs across all of our platforms and incorporates the OPEN LOOK look and feel. With a free right-to-use, our goal is to make this OPEN LOOK end-user environment widely available to our customers.
