-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- AT&T and OPEN LOOK SunFLASH Vol 13 #8 January 1990 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FOR RELEASE TUESDAY, JANUARY 9, 1990 MORRISTOWN, N.J. -- AT&T's UNIX Software Operation and Sun Microsystems today released a list of hardware and system software vendors who have committed to shipping products incorporating the OPEN LOOK(TM) graphical user interface (GUI). OPEN LOOK is the GUI bundled with UNIX(R) System V Release 4.0. The vendors are Amdahl, ARIX, AT&T, Commodore, Fujitsu, Generics, Harris, HCL, ICL, Intel, Interactive Systems, KonsultHuset Data, Labtam Ltd., Motorola, Olivetti, Pyramid, Quantum, Quest Systems, Solbourne, Sun, Tolerant Software, Toshiba and Wipro. The OPEN LOOK GUI is an intuitive, mouse-driven user interface designed by Sun and AT&T that features icons, push- pins, pull-down menus, point-and-click desktop and file managers and other aspects found in "user-friendly" systems. The interface is easy to master without any prior experience, and requires less effort than other GUIs--fewer keystrokes and shorter cursor movements, according to the companies. The OPEN LOOK GUI specification provides a long-range blueprint for further product releases, said Susan Van Ness, AT&T's OPEN LOOK marketing manager. "This allows both hardware and software vendors to plan their product releases in concert with a complete user interface that will evolve in step with the UNIX System V operating system platform." Both a File Manager and Workspace Manager are integrated into the OPEN LOOK GUI and provide a comfortable environment for end-users to access UNIX system files and to tailor their workspace, Van Ness said. "For example, users may select screen colors or create mouse and keyboard mappings to suit their preferences." Van Ness added that end-user not only will find the OPEN LOOK environment easy and intuitive, but also consistent. "OPEN LOOK GUI's standard set of functions enable users to perform tasks that are consistent across applications, thereby reducing learning time," she said. Dick Gorman, Sun's director of software products marketing, said, "We're involved in a seeding process. OPEN LOOK GUI's portability and the large volume of potential end users attracts independent software vendors (ISVs); the large volume of ISVs attracts hardware vendors." Both AT&T and Sun are committed to the OPEN LOOK GUI and continue to recruit and support both hardware and software vendors, assist on ISV sales calls and provide direct technical support to ISV programmers porting the interface. AT&T's UNIX Software Operation offers financial incentives for OEMs shipping the OPEN LOOK GUI on UNIX System V Release 3 platforms.
