-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Miscellaneous Tips SunFLASH Vol 13 #7 January 1990 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is a new feature for SunFlash called "Miscellaneous Tips". We collect these tips from a variety of source and guarantee none of them! If you have any tips that you think would help other Sun users, please send them to johnj@sunvice.sun.com. Similarly, if one of these tips is eroneous in the extreme, please tell us ! Unlike other columns, newsgroups and mailing lists we just want the questions with answers! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Unplugging Keyboards From A Running System Calcomp printcap entry Sun{write, draw, paint} filter availability Re: getting a new automounted server -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Unplugging Keyboards From A Running System > 1. Why does the SPARCstation 1 crash when the keyboard is unplugged and > plugged back in? Like ANY OTHER SUN, the act of plugging in a keyboard sends a "break" signal to the system, which drops it down into the boot prom. This is a feature, not a bug, since it can be used to regain control of the machine at times when "L1-A" is not effective. If you do not get a ">" prompt, press return. Return to running unix from where you left off with a "c" command to the monitor (press "C", then return). It is possible for more than one break signal to have been sent, so if the above seems to do nothing, press return again; if you get another prompt from the rom, hit yet another "C". -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Calcomp printcap entry Here is the printcap for the 1023 that we give out to the VARs: lp:\ :lp=/dev/ttya:sd=/var/spool/lp:br#9600:sf:sh:mx#0:\ :ms=cs7,parenb,-parodd,-ignpar,ixon,ixoff,-echo: Use these settings on the 1023: Plotter type= 7585A format= CPGL baud rate= 9600 8 data bits, 1 stop bit no parity Note that this information is for the 386i running 4.0.2. Is there an easy > way (short of fastbooting) to get the automounter to try and find a better > server (i.e. one that will talk back)? you must have an entry in your direct automount map which looks like this: /usr/local host1,host2,host3:/usr/local if your system hangs you must do the following: just umount /tmp_mnt/usr/local manually, send automount the signal -1 ( this asks automount to reread /etc/mtab ) and try again. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Sunflash is an electronic mail news service from Sun Microsystems, Ft.
