-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS STANDARDIZE ON SUN SOLUTION FOR PC NETWORKING SunFLASH Vol 14 #15 February 1990 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PC-NFS to Be Used by Academic Institutions Throughout the United Kingdom CAMBERLEY, Surrey --February 13, 1990-- Sun Microsystems and the Combined Higher Education Software Team (CHEST) today announced the signing of a licensing agreement that designates Sun's Network File System (NFS(R)) for personal computers, called PC-NFS(R), as the standard PC networking solution for higher education institutions. As a result, approximately 100,000 PCs are expected to use PC-NFS at 80 to 100 campuses throughout the United Kingdom. The agreement calls for a volume PC-NFS site license that gives every university, college, vocational school and research council in the UK access to PC-NFS. Thirty-two institutions have already announced their intention to use PC-NFS, and as part of the program, will purchase support services from Sun for a period of five years. CHEST, the organization responsible for negotiating software licenses on behalf of British higher education institutions, was asked by the Inter-University Networking Committee (IUNC) to establish the agreement with Sun. The IUNC selected PC-NFS after evaluating several PC networking solutions. Annette Haworth, chairman of the IUNC in the UK, stated, "PC-NFS gives a terrific boost to integrated distributed computing at both the departmental and campus-wide level, with users able to access and share large and centrally managed files. Having a campus license makes it much easier to administer the network and helps us coordinate all of our computing resources." PC-NFS is the DOS implementation of Sun's Network File System, the industry standard for transparent file access among different hardware architectures and operating systems. Since NFS is not limited to a particular vendor or operating system, PC-NFS is an ideal connectivity solution for campuses that wish to link PCs to hardware based on UNIX(R), VMS, VM, MVS or other major operating systems. "Like many institutions today, colleges are rarely single-vendor environments," said Dave Fowler, Sun's director of PC distributed systems. "Yet, with the exception of PC-NFS, PC LAN solutions provide limited support for connecting to workstations, minicomputers and mainframes. Sun's open systems strategy is ideal for mixed vendor networks like those in universities and our agreement with CHEST further validates this approach." Campuses that participate in the PC-NFS license program will receive a free training course specifically developed as part of this agreement. In addition to the basic PC-NFS software, campuses have the option to purchase PC-NFS LifeLine, Sun's electronic mail and network backup package for PCs. A PC-NFS Programmer's Toolkit, which lets users develop and execute their own distributed applications, is also available. The toolkit supports Sun's Open Network Computing (ONC(TM)) platform, including the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) protocol, which forms the basis of the common platform for distributed applications unveiled last year by Sun, Novell and Netwise. Several of the campuses already committed to PC-NFS have expressed interest in developing such applications. CHEST, located at the University of Bath and at Leicester Polytechnic, was formed nearly two years ago to obtain quality commercial software on behalf of education establishments. CHEST works with other higher education computer committees to establish the most favorable price and licensing terms for educational institutions. CHEST's most notable successes have included negotiations for PC-NFS, presentation graphics, databases, statistical and numerical libraries, along with various PC-based packages.
