-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SUN JOINS VITA AS SPONSOR MEMBER SunFLASH Vol 14 #14 February 1990 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LONG BEACH --February 14, 1990-- Sun Microsystems today announced that the company has joined the VMEbus International Trade Association (VITA) as a sponsor member. The announcement was made at BUSCON/90-WEST, an industry conference and trade show dedicated to computer board and system technology. "Sun has worked on the VITA Next Generation Working Group for the past year and a half. By formally joining VITA, Sun can extend its role in supporting open bus architectures through membership in the VITA Technical Committee," said Lym Hevle, executive director of VITA. Sun is a leading supplier of VME-based computer systems worldwide. The company continues to support its customer needs with open buses, including VMEbus, and SBus. The latter is a low cost, high performance modular I/O interconnect introduced in Sun's highly successful SPARCstation(TM) 1 desktop RISC computer. VITA is promoting the VME Futurebus Extended Architecture (VFEA) as the new standard for high-performance bus design technology, which includes the Futurebus+ family of specifications. "Sun recognizes the innovation and excellence embodied within the IEEE Futurebus+ specifications. We will continue to support this leading-edge IEEE development activity, with a view to using this technology at the appropriate time," said Wayne Rosing, vice president of the desktop systems and graphics group at Sun. At BUSCON, Sun also demonstrated the Sun SPARCengine(TM) 1Eurocard. The SPARCengine 1E is a 12.5-MIPS, board-level computer that combines the price/performance advantages of SPARC and SBus with the flexibility and compatibility of VME in a 6U board. "The introduction of this product represents both a serious commitment to the embedded applications market and a clear indication of Sun's support for the objectives embodied by VITA," said Dr. Paul Borrill, Director of the SBus Architecture and Support Group at Sun.
