-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SUN AND MICROGNOSIS PENETRATE TOKYO TRADING MARKET WITH SALE TO MITSUBISHI BANK SunFLASH Vol 14 #11 February 1990 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Largest Ever UNIX Workstation-based Trading System in Japan Goes Live MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. --February 12, 1990-- Sun Microsystems and Micrognosis, Inc., a leading developer and manufacturer for dealing rooms, today announced that Micrognosis' trading floor system based on Sun's popular RISC-based SPARCstation(TM) 1 just went "live" at Mitsubishi Bank, the fourth largest bank in the world. The new system was installed by Telecomet International, Inc., and is the largest ever in Japan, using more than 300 Sun workstations to automate Mitsubishi's Tokyo trading floor. Telecomet is Micrognosis' sole distributor and service agent in Japan. Micrognosis designed the bank's trading system and added sophisticated software that allows traders to integrate digital and video information from several external and internal sources on a single trader's workstation. Both Sun and Micrognosis enhanced their software to support Japanese language processing. Sun and Micrognosis have penetrated the world's leading financial centers in the United States, Europe and Japan. With this installation, Sun's workstation technology is found in the largest digital trading floors in both Japan and Europe, as well as in 22 of the top 25 U.S. securities firms. Meanwhile, more than 230 financial institutions worldwide use the Micrognosis trading system. Last year, Micrognosis sold its trading system comprised of more than 250 Sun workstations to Swiss Bank Corporation International in London. The Micrognosis system using the latest Sun UNIX(R) workstation technology implements a new-generation trading environment incorporating sophisticated color graphics, an intuitive user interface and advanced local area networking. Information from a variety of digital (from the workstation) and video (from monitors) sources is consolidated at the trader's desktop and can be manipulated with Micrognosis' advanced multi-function trader's keyboard, which communicates directly with the Sun workstation. The multitasking capabilities of the workstation allow each trader to work with different applications and information sources simultaneously to increase trader responsiveness to global market dynamics. According to Michio Johmori, managing director of Mitsubishi Bank, the Micrognosis system incorporating the Sun workstation was selected because of its advanced decision support and simulation capabilities. "We recognize that information systems are becoming indispensable tools for competing in today's international financial markets. The combined technology of Micrognosis and Sun puts us at the forefront of this trend by giving us better information to improve our decision-making and risk management," he said. Technology from Sun and Micrognosis gives the trading system fault tolerant capabilities. For example, the SPARCstation 1 has been configured with dual Ethernet controllers linked to both a primary and backup local area network, while digital data is secured through the use of fault tolerant software developed by Micrognosis. This combination ensures system reliability in the event of a failure. Service and support for Mitsubishi Bank's new automated trading floor is being provided by Telecomet International.
