-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CANADIAN GOVERNMENT PUTS SUN MICROSYSTEMS ON APPROVED VENDOR LIST SunFLASH Vol 14 #7 February 1990 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.,--January 31, 1990-- Sun Microsystems of Canada Inc. announced today it was granted permanent "rationalized" status by Industry Science and Technology Canada and the Ministry of Supply and Service. As a result, Sun will automatically be placed on a preferred vendor list as a "category one supplier" to the Canadian government on every workstation request for purchase. Sun Microsystems of Canada is a wholly owned subsidiary of Sun Microsystems, Inc., headquartered in Mountain View, Calif. Under the terms for rationalization, Sun will be aggressively expanding its software development center in Montreal, which specializes in communications software. Sun will also begin planning for a Canadian facility, to be operational by the mid-90's, which will be a key supplier of products to the company. In addition, Sun has agreed to expand its procurement effort in Canada, by which products manufactured in Canada are exported to Sun in the United States, and incorporated as part of Sun systems sold worldwide. Sun Canada President Everett Anstey said, "Since the formation of Sun Canada in l985, Sun Microsystems has continued to make major commitments in Canada in the areas of employment and R&D investment. This announcement is further evidence of our ongoing efforts to be a good corporte citizen in Canada." Anstey continued, "The key to Sun success has been the promotion and adoption of open system and standards within the computer community. By using the UNIX(R) operating system, open systems architecture and industry standards, Sun has evolved as the leading workstation vendor worldwide and the standard platform for many application developers in Canada." Sun Canada has agreed to assist Canadian software vendors in expanding software application sales within Canada and to other countries through marketing support programs that are part of Sun's worldwide Catalyst program.
