The sale, valued at more than $2 million, is the largest single order received from a Sun VAR since Sun established its VAR program in November, 1987. TIAA-CREF will use its extensive Sun network to administer and manage the use of investment funds. The company has developed in-house UNIX(R) applications based on Sybase's database management software and DOS-based spreadsheet and word processing applications. GNP Computers will add proprietary software to enhance UNIX security and technical expertise for back-up and recovery procedures as well as network administration. "The Sun386i offered the best hardware solution for integrating our UNIX and DOS applications," said Chuck Dvorkin, vice president at TIAA-CREF. "GNP Computers clearly had the best technical support and service for our network environment." TIAA-CREF selected GNP Computers as its supplier because of GNP's UNIX expertise and attentivenesss to the account. "We were able to offer a total package that included price, support and service that no other vendor could match," said Ken Kalb, director of operations at GNP Computers. GNP also provides 24-hour technical and administrative support with continuous on-line system maintenance. "In the future, we will be moving more of our users to the SPARCstations as additional DOS applications migrate to the UNIX world," said Mr. Dvorkin. "We also plan on upgrading many of our Sun386is with Sun's 80486 CPU board upgrade." GNP Computers, founded by California Institute of Technology (Caltech) graduates in 1983, has been a Sun VAR since February, 1989. Sun VARs are independent companies authorized to resell Sun equipment as part of a total turnkey solution for customers. Sun's VAR program currently includes more than 250 resellers in the United States.
