The agreement mainly covers Sun workstations and servers based on the company's high-performance SPARC(TM) technology. In the first year alone, British Telecom's order is likely to be worth more than $10 million (U.S.). Sun's relationship with BT began three years ago, with Sun having supplied systems for a wide variety of projects within BT and Mitel, a BT subsidiary, since then. Under the agreement, BT and Sun will also jointly market products for strategic applications. Commenting on the agreement, Bill Passmore, vice president (UK and Nordic) of Sun Microsystems, said, "With our mutual commitment to open systems, we anticipate a promising future with British Telecom." Chris Elwell, BT's UK procurement manager, said, "This agreement is part of our computer strategy, in which Sun has been involved for some time. Our open systems policy is relevant both to the markets into which we sell and to our own internal needs. Sun will play a part in the UK and international development of this policy." Sun's agreement with BT encompasses all BT subsidiaries, including Tymnet, a newly acquired subsidiary in the United States; Mitel in Canada; and other European and international companies owned by BT.
