The agreement mainly covers Sun workstations and servers based on the company's high-performance SPARC(TM) technology. 14.02 Sun VAR wins $2 millon Deal GNP Computers, a Sun value-added reseller (VAR) with offices in Pasadena, Calif. and New York, today reported the sale of more than 100 Sun386i(TM) workstations and Sun SPARCstations(TM) to TIAA-CREF, a New York-based non-profit company that manages a $70 billion investment fund for college educators. This patch is intended to support building shared libraries, provide files that were accidently left out the release (some include files & dbxtool source) and fixes problems when building on a DECstation 3100. Additionally, we've included fixes for some bugs that have been reported in the last few weeks. Details of the update are towards the end of this message. The XView source donation, for those who may not already know, includes the complete source for the XView toolkit, the OLWM window manager, a number sample XView applications, and a collection of commercial-quality Lucida bitmap fonts from Bigelow & Holmes. 14.07 PR: Sun & Canadian Government CANADIAN GOVERNMENT PUTS SUN MICROSYSTEMS ON APPROVED VENDOR LIST Sun Microsystems of Canada Inc. announced that it was granted permanent "rationalized" status by Industry Science and Technology Canada and the Ministry of Supply and Service. As a result, Sun will automatically be placed on a preferred vendor list as a "category one supplier" to the Canadian government on every workstation request for purchase. 14.08 OpenWindows 1.0.1 On February 9, 1990, Sun will begin shipment of OpenWindows 1.0.1. This product will immediately replace OpenWindows 1.0 and will be sent automatically as an upgrade to all current OpenWindows customers. 14.09 MIT's X11R4 Announcement The MIT X Consortium is proud to announce Release 4 of the X Window System, Version 11. Highlights of this version include: o many bugs fixes o the sample server has been heavily optimized, particularly for monochrome and 8-bit color frame buffers o support for several additional displays o correct (and faster) wide lines o more fonts o new color database o non-rectangular windows extension o support for X Display Manager Control Protocol in server and xdm o client support for System V, Release 3.2 and STREAMS o function prototypes and experimental C++ support in Xlib o security hooks for passing authentication information, plus a sample secret token-based implementation o enhanced Xt Intrinsics with gadgets and varargs interfaces o support the ICCCM in libraries, clients, and window managers o greatly improved Xaw widgets, including menu widget o many new utility routines for standard colormaps, converters etc. o new window managers, including support for a revised twm o greatly improved xmh interface o 8-bit and on-the-fly font setting in xterm o new ditroff previewer o new versions of Andrew, InterViews, and Xw toolkits o XView toolkit and OPEN LOOK window manager o Serpent User Interface Management System o XGKS library o XJ, Wnn, kinput, xterm Internationalization utilities 14.10 Kodak To Provide Sun Hardware Service Sun Microsystems, Inc., and Eastman Kodak Company announced the signing of an agreement under which Kodak's Customer Equipment Service Division (CESD) will extend Sun's delivery of hardware-related customer service in central and western regions of the United States. 14.11 Sun Trading System At Mitsubishi Bank SUN AND MICROGNOSIS PENETRATE TOKYO TRADING MARKET WITH SALE TO MITSUBISHI BANK Sun Microsystems and Micrognosis, Inc., a leading developer and manufacturer for dealing rooms, today announced that Micrognosis' trading floor system based on Sun's popular RISC-based SPARCstation(TM) 1 just went "live" at Mitsubishi Bank, the fourth largest bank in the world. The new system was installed by Telecomet International, Inc., and is the largest ever in Japan, using more than 300 Sun workstations to automate Mitsubishi's Tokyo trading floor. Telecomet is Micrognosis' sole distributor and service agent in Japan. 14.12 On-Line Support System CSS Announces the On-Line Support System Sun's Customer Service and Satisfaction Division is now offering support contract customers another method of getting answers to their technical questions with the introduction of its On-Line Support System (OSS). The On-Line Support System will provide 24 hour access to a bulletin board where customers can retrieve timely Sun product information and an automated patch request database which allows customers with support contracts to order existing patches automatically. Currently the On-Line Support System only addresses issues directly related to SunOS, but by June, 1990 this informative service will be extended to a majority of Sun products. 14.13 3rd Party Product: '386 Sbus Card '386 S-Bus Card Announced At BusCon At BusCon '90 in Long Beach, Puzzle Systems of Morgan Hill, CA announced a 386 S-bus card. This is a single width S-bus card that will support VGA/Super VGA resolution, multiple DOS window sessions and the card offers 386 SX level of DOS performance. Availability is May 1990. Cost will be about $2000. 14.14 PR: Sun Joins VME Association SUN JOINS VITA AS SPONSOR MEMBER Sun Microsystems announced that the company has joined the VMEbus International Trade Association (VITA) as a sponsor member. The announcement was made at BUSCON/90-WEST, an industry conference and trade show dedicated to computer board and system technology. 14.15 PR: PC/NFS Choose By CHEST HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS STANDARDIZE ON SUN SOLUTION FOR PC NETWORKING PC-NFS to Be Used by Academic Institutions Throughout the United Kingdom Sun Microsystems and the Combined Higher Education Software Team (CHEST) announced the signing of a licensing agreement that designates Sun's Network File System (NFS(R)) for personal computers, called PC-NFS(R), as the standard PC networking solution for higher education institutions.
