---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash AIR FORCE INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY CHOOSES SUN WORKSTATIONS SunFLASH Vol 24 #5 December 1990 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. --December 5, 1990-- Sun Microsystems Federal, Inc., will supply powerful SPARC(R)-based workstations to the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) through a contract estimated to reach $7.4 million during the next two years. AFIT, located at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, is an educational institution for Air Force students at the graduate level. Sun workstations will support Air Force education and research conducted by faculty and students. Under terms of the contract, Sun will include its standard UNIX(R) operating system, SunOS(TM) and the OPEN LOOK(R) graphical user interface with the SPARC systems to be purchased by AFIT. These systems include Sun's SPARCstation(TM) desktop computers and SPARCservers(TM). Sun will also install and support its NFS(R) distributed computing file system and other ONC(TM) products. Additionally, C and FORTRAN compilers will be shipped. The combination of Sun's networking, along with its software and hardware platforms will enable AFIT to move to a "workgroup computing" model in which networks of people share resources using "clients" -- powerful desktop workstations -- linked to "servers" that manipulate information. AFIT will utilize Sun workstations for document preparation, C and FORTRAN programming, and when combined with third-party engineering packages, for statistical analysis and fluid dynamics engineering. "By moving to powerful networked workstations on the desktop, AFIT's users will free themselves from the input and wait cycle of their current centralized processor solution," said Larry Hambly, president of Sun Microsystems Federal. "AFITs selection of Sun exemplifies the government's continuing move to open systems and distributed computing. AFIT's use of networked Sun workstations will greatly facilitate its ability to provide the Air Force with sophisticated training and research tools."
