---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Florida SunFlash SUN UNVEILS ADA DEVELOPMENT ENVIRONMENT SunFLASH Vol 24 #1 December 1990 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Combines Ada Compilation System With Easy-to-Use OPEN LOOK Programmer Productivity Tools MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. --December 4, 1990-- Sun Microsystems has taken the lead among UNIX(R) system vendors serving the government and education markets by offering a complete Ada language development environment with superior ease of use features. The Sun Ada Development Environment takes full advantage of UNIX and Sun's SPARC(R)-based workstations and servers. Sun's solution combines Sun Ada, a robust RISC/UNIX Ada compilation product licensed from Verdix Corporation, with SPARCworks(TM)/Ada, a suite of easy-to-use programmer productivity tools that utilize the popular OPEN LOOK(R) graphical user interface. These elements give Ada programmers an intuitive, consistent environment that makes the edit-compile-debug cycle easier and more efficient. The Sun Ada Development Environment complements a wealth of Ada tools available from Sun's Catalyst(TM) third-party software vendors. Together with these vendors, Sun offers software tools for all phases of the Ada software lifecycle -- from front-end design and analysis through embedded/real-time deployment, testing and maintenance. Many of these tools also provide support for MIL-STD-2167A and Computer-Aided Acquisition and Logistics (CALS)-compliant software development. Sun Ada features a fast optimizing compiler and tools for automating program builds. It also offers programming support tools for the debugging, disassembling, profiling and source code formatting of Ada programs. Sun Ada complies with ANSI/MIL-STD-1815A and FIPS 119 (Federal Information Processing Standard) specifications and has been validated by the Ada Joint Program Office. In addition, for distributed configuration management and version control, Sun Ada is integrated with Sun's NSE(TM) networked software development platform, sold separately. The SPARCworks/Ada tools bring the ease of use of the OPEN LOOK graphical interface to Ada software development. These tools include an object-based graphical browser for Ada program libraries, a compilation manager, a multi-window symbolic debugger with task browsing capabilities and an on-line version of the Ada Reference Manual. The window-based tools use icons and graphical displays as well as OPEN LOOK drag-and-drop capabilities, which allows them to work together easily. The distributed capabilities of the X Window System in Sun's OpenWindows(TM) provides remote access to the Sun Ada Development Environment from any workstation on the network. SPARCworks/Ada also operates with the OpenWindows DeskSet(TM) tools, creating a consistent, simple desktop programming environment. DeskSet contains icon-based productivity aids such as a file manager, calendar manager and electronic mail tool. The Sun Ada Development Environment allows workgroups of Ada developers to take maximum advantage of Sun's low-cost desktop SPARCstation(TM) workstations connected to any of Sun's family of high-performance servers. According to William Mackrell at Binghamton Simulator Company, "The SPARCworks/Ada tools are very easy to use and have greatly increased the productivity of our software engineering team. Combining Sun's Ada Development Environment with OpenWindows DeskSet frees us from the details of UNIX." Binghamton Simulator Company updates, modifies and re-manufactures government and commercial flight simulators. The Sun Ada Development Environment is supported on all Sun SPARC-based systems running SunOS(TM) 4.1 and above. Sun will sell and support the products directly. The Sun Ada Development Environment is priced at $10,000 for a single-user license, including media and documentation. Multi-user and educational licenses are also available. The product will be available in the second quarter of 1991.
