---------------------------------------------------------------------------- SUN AUTOMATES SCOTTISH COURTS ADMINISTRATION IN $5 MILLION ORDER SunFLASH Vol 20 #31 August 1990 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Major SPARC Win for Sun in Legal Market MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--August 27, 1990-- Sun Microsystems has won an order worth more than $5 million (U.S.) from the Scottish Courts Administration (SCA), headquartered in Edinburgh, Scotland, to automate the administration of criminal cases in the country's Sheriff courts. As a result of the order, Sun hardware will be installed in all of Scotland's 49 Sheriff Courts. Larger courts will use networks of SPARCstations(TM) and SPARCservers(TM), while smaller courts -- for example, some of those in the Western Isles -- will use a single SPARCstation. In total, 21 SPARCstation 330 deskside workstations and 75 SPARCserver 1+ servers, with a range of monitors, laser and impact printers and networking devices will be purchased. Sun's solution meets the requirements of the SCA's Criminal Operations Project (COP). These systems will support the court stage and accounting stage of criminal cases: it will record events in each case as they happen; produce all the necessary minutes and court orders; create, operate and reconcile accounts for the collection of financial penalties; and produce warnings on non-completion of events, such as a non-payment. Disposals, such as a fine or a community service order, can be entered into a system in the courtroom at the moment that it is decided. The application software for COP was developed by the SCA itself, using ORACLE. Ian Scott, head of the SCA's Operational Review Team and project manager for COP, said: "We selected the Sun solution because it met all our criteria. It was a cost-effective offering that gave us not only the response times that we needed but the memory and storage capacity, too." Equipment is currently being installed at the SCA's headquarters in Edinburgh. Installation in the courts will begin in October.
