XGL, Sun's new, high performance, full functioned, 2-D/3-D graphics
interface for Openwindows started shipping this week.  XGL is designed
for developers of graphical applications in MCAD and EDA, as well as
Animation, Simulation and Earth Resources/GIS.

XGL joins SunVision, SunGKS, SunPHIGS, Xlib and Postscript making Sun's
graphics software line the most complete offering in the industry.

Here is a summary of key points:

   - High performance, sophisticated graphics in OpenWindows.
	o Fully optimized for the GX 
	o Tightly integrated with OpenWindows for seamless operation

   - Broad 2-D and 3-D functionality to support a wide range of 
     MCAD, EDA, animation and scientific applications.

   - Transparent acceleration allows one port to run on all Sun GX
     and color framebuffers as well as future accelerators.

   - Immediate mode interface gives developers direct control of the 
     graphics display

   - Separate 2-D and 3-D rendering pipelines allow 2-D applications
     to achieve maximum performance

   - XGL 1.0 on a Sparcstation 1+ GX is FAST!  Benchmarks
     show 540,000 2D vectors/sec (256 - 10 pixel polylines). 

   - XGL 1.0 supports multiple alphabets.
  
   - XGL 1.0 runs in OpenWindows V 2
     XGL supports SunOS 4.1 with the 4.1-GFX rev 1 upgrade tape
	or SunOS 4.0.3 with the 4.0.3-GFX rev 2 upgrade tape.

you the XGL demos.
