---------------------------------------------------------------------------- SUN MICROSYSTEMS SPARC/UNIX WORKSTATIONS NAMED STANDARD FOR ALL GE AEROSPACE DIVISIONS SunFLASH Vol 20 #16 August 1990 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Potential of $100 Million in Revenues Seen By Sun From Multi-Year Contract MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--August 13, 1990-- Sun Microsystems SPARC(R)-based computer workstations and servers have been selected as the standard product for all GE Aerospace divisions. Sun was chosen after a competitive selection process that was part of GE Aerospace's ASSIST (Aerospace Support for Systems, Integration, Software and Test) program. The major goal of ASSIST is to develop standard hardware and software systems for engineering use throughout GE Aerospace divisions. Workstation vendors were evaluated on technical qualifications and on the basis of long-term commitment to act as a strategic partner to GE Aerospace. As sole supplier of engineering workstations to the aerospace giant, Sun expects the relationship to yield as much as $100 million in revenue over the multi-year span of the contract. GE Aerospace is one of the 13 business units that are part of General Electric Company. In May, this parent company selected Sun as the strategic supplier of UNIX(R)-based workstations and servers for its business units, which also include such organizations as NBC, Kidder Peabody, GE Medical Systems and GE Aircraft Engines. All products are based on the SPARC/RISC architecture and the UNIX operating system. In addition to workstations and servers, Sun will provide networking products, graphics enhancements and, through Sun's third-party partners, software engineering tools for ECAD, MCAD, systems engineering and CASE users. This new GE Aerospace standard system and software development platform is based on a distributed client/server model of computing. Technical requirements included scalable workstations, international design standards, standard graphical interfaces and the ability to share information easily with peers, regardless of the physical location or computer they use. "We view Sun as a strong partner in our Engineering Process Improvement (EPI) program," said Charles Wise, GE program manager for ASSIST. "This equipment will help make our individual engineers more productive." The systems will be used for all electronic and mechanical design automation and software engineering applications within the GE Aerospace divisions.
