---------------------------------------------------------------------------- SUN INTRODUCES NEW VERSIONS OF COMMON LISP AND SYMBOLIC PROGRAMMING ENVIRONMENT SunFLASH Vol 20 #1 August 1990 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Release 4.0 Includes New OPEN LOOK Support MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. --July 31, 1990-- Sun Microsystems today introduced the Sun Common Lisp 4.0, a new version of its popular language for the artificial intelligence (AI) market, along with a new version of its Symbolic Programming Environment SPE(TM)(Symbolic Programming Environment), a set of integrated tools for developing applications in Sun's Common Lisp. A new window interface, LispView(TM), has been added to Sun's Common Lisp 4.0, making it easier for Lisp programmers to create applications that use the OPEN LOOK(TM) graphical user interface. A Delivery Tool Kit that helps make end-user applications more efficient and compact has also been added. In addition, the new release supports the standard Common Lisp Object System (CLOS). Sun's Common Lisp 4.0 is a complete implementation of the ANSI standard Common Lisp language. To the more than 700 standard Common Lisp functions, Sun has added LispView, a set of tools that allows Lisp programmers to build sophisticated applications with OPEN LOOK interfaces. LispView also includes a translator that converts windows created with Sun's OpenWindows(TM) Developer's Guide into Lisp code. Thus developers can create prototypes of the way they want their user interface to look, with the underlying code imported into their Lisp programs automatically. LispView is object-oriented, based on CLOS, and communicates directly with the XView(TM) toolkit and X window system libraries that are part of OpenWindows. Sun's Common Lisp now includes the Delivery Tool Kit, designed to help Lisp developers create efficient applications. It contains performance analysis tools that help Lisp programmers identify critical sections of the program where additional development may yield performance improvement. The Delivery Tool kit also contains the Reorganizer, a feature that can improve the performance of an application by rearranging code and data to share the same portion of memory during program execution. Additional product highlights are support of the standard Common Lisp Object System (CLOS) for object-oriented programming, development and production compilers, and an ephemeral garbage collection system. The new release can call or be called by functions written in Sun's C, FORTRAN and Pascal. New SPE Supports Sun's Common Lisp 4.0 Sun also introduced SPE 1.2, a Lisp programming environment for Common Lisp 4.0 that provides the same interactive style of programming familiar to users of dedicated Lisp machines. SPE is composed of window-based, integrated, visual tools such as editors, debuggers and program analyzers and greatly accelerates the software development cycle. Sun's Common Lisp 4.0 is source compatible with the previous 3.0 release. It is available for the Sun-3(TM) and SPARC(R) systems from Sun. Common Lisp is priced at $4,000 U.S. list, and SPE is $3,500 U.S. list. Prices include media and documentation. Shipments will begin in 90 days. Sun's enhanced Lisp products are part of its wide range of advanced tools to aid software developers.
