-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- X/OPEN SELECTS NETWORK FILE SYSTEM AS STANDARD FOR PC CONNECTIVITY SunFLASH Vol 16 #17 April 1990 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. --April 24, 1990-- Sun Microsystems has announced that X/Open is specifying part of Sun's Network File System (NFS) as one of two protocols for connecting personal computers to UNIX(R)-based systems. X/Open will publish these specifications in a future issue of the X/Open Portability Guide (XPG). NFS, a de facto standard for file sharing in mixed-vendor computer networks, is available from several vendors of PC-DOS equipment. Sun itself has shipped more than 200,000 copies of its PC-NFS networking software. PC-NFS allows PCs to access files and resources such as printers throughout a heterogeneous network. X/Open has specified the PC portion of the NFS protocol as one of two protocols for connecting personal computers to UNIX-based systems. In addition to PC-NFS's protocol, X/Open will also specify Microsoft's SMB protocol for XPG-compliant PC connectivity. Sun's Open Network Computing (ONC)/NFS platform for distributed computing has been licensed to more than 290 organizations worldwide and has been implemented on all major operating systems, including UNIX, MVS, VM, VMS and PC-DOS. The estimated installed based of systems supporting ONC/NFS exceeds one million. "We welcome X/Open's selection of NFS for PC interworking," said Eric Schmidt, vice president of Sun's General System Group. "This is further recognition that Sun's ONC/NFS technology is the leader for distributed computing. It is a standard part of AT&T's UNIX System V Release 4 and we hope it will be selected by the Open Software Foundation as their distributed computing choice." Sun is actively participating in X/Open's continuing work on general file sharing protocols. X/Open is an independent, non-profit consortium of international computer system vendors that is developing the Common Applications Environment, specified in the X/Open Portability Guide. The XPG defines standard interfaces between systems and applications software. Sun has been a member of X/Open since January 1988 and is currently shipping XPG2-branded software in its SunOS(TM) 4.1 release. Sun and AT&T co-developed UNIX System V Release 4, which has been acknowledged by X/Open as the first shipped product to be compliant with XPG3. Sun Microsystems, Inc., headquartered in Mountain View, Calif., is the leading worldwide supplier of network-based distributed computing systems, including professional workstations, servers and UNIX operating system and productivity software. ### NFS and PC-NFS are registered trademarks of Sun Microsystems, Inc.
