April 18, 1990 Sun Microsystems today awarded an initial round of grants to support community organizations in the areas surrounding its two major U.S. facilities in the San Francisco Bay Area and Merrimack Valley in Massachusetts. The grants, awarded through Sun's Corporate Contributions Program, total $159,077 and support programs in education, job training, leadership development and business development. "Achieving a leading position is only one measure of a company's success," said Scott McNealy, Sun president and CEO. "It's also important to us to share our success by helping local residents participate in the economic development of their communities." In the San Francisco Bay Area, Sun donated a total of $97,028 to: Bayshore Employment Services, Inc. (East Palo Alto, Calif.); Peninsula Conflict Resolution Center (San Mateo, Calif.); Junior Achievement of Santa Clara/Bay Area; Ravenswood City School District (East Palo Alto, Calif); and the city of Palo Alto for the Youth Community Service Program. In the Merrimack Valley, $62,049 in grants were awarded to: Boston University School of Social Work; Lawrence Futures Youth Commission (Lawrence, Mass.); Heritage Common Community Development Corporation (Lawrence, Mass.); and Community Action, Inc. The department accepts applications for the Contributions Program from non-profit organizations for programs serving economically disadvantaged populations in the two regions. Grants are made on a competitive proposal basis four times per year. Proposals for the next round of grants are currently under consideration and recipients will be notified in May. Launched in January 1990, the Corporate Contributions Program is part of Sun's Community Involvement Program, which supports educational and economic improvement in the local communities. Other programs include the Community Action Volunteer Program and the Sun Employee Matching Gifts Program.
