The GUIDE tool enhances Sun's rich OpenWindows(TM) application environment, which includes OPEN LOOK. When combined with Sun's powerful SPARC(TM) systems based on RISC and UNIX(R) operating system, OpenWindows delivers a high-performance, low-cost, easy-to-use desktop solution for the demanding computing needs of the 90s. The new GUIDE prototyper is an interactive tool that features a palette of icons that represent various objects (window control functions, scrollbars, menus). Rather than writing code, a developer can merely "drag" an icon with the mouse and "drop" it in the desired location. The GUIDE tool automatically generates the user interface code, thereby saving significant development time. With GUIDE, developers can build and test the "look and feel" of an OPEN LOOK user interface layout without ever writing any code. Since GUIDE is integrated with the desktop tools that are part of OpenWindows, applications designed with it can offer "drag and drop" file loading. End users simply select and drag an icon into a window and the application will automatically load. "Close to 300 developers now have our OpenWindows environment," said Ed Zander, Sun's vice president of marketing. "We believe that GUIDE will further increase commitment to our SPARC platform, which has had sales to date of more than 25,000 systems. Using OpenWindows and GUIDE, a whole new generation of easy-to-use applications can take advantage of SPARC's high performance. Already, there are 800 SPARCware(TM) applications available far exceeding any other RISC system." OpenWindows Now Being Shipped Sun's OpenWindows was introduced last March and includes the intuitive OPEN LOOK user interface (based on technology licensed from Xerox; designed by Sun, AT&T and the industry), the X11/NeWS(TM) window system (combining X11 with Sun's NeWS, based on the PostScript imaging language) and the XView(TM) toolkit, for designing OPEN LOOK applications. It is now being shipped in volume for developers. Said Zander: "We expect many OPEN LOOK-based products to be unveiled in the coming months." OpenWindows has been enriched with Sun's OpenFonts(TM) and DeskSet(TM). OpenFonts is sophisticated font technology that allow users to create high-resolution fonts at any point size or angle of rotation. It features more than 200 available fonts. DeskSet is a suite of everyday tools that utilizes Sun's "drag and drop" metaphor. It includes a file manager that graphically displays a hierarchical file system; a mail tool; a binder; an icon editor; a text editor; a snapshot tool; performance meters; a clock; and a wastebasket. Pricing and Availability The GUIDE prototyper runs on Release 4.X of the SunOS(TM) operating system on the X11/NeWS window system. GUIDE media, documentation and a right-to-use license will be sold unbundled for $250. It will be available in the first quarter of 1990. An OpenWindows right-to-use license is being shipped at no charge with every Sun workstation. This will enable customer sites with many Sun systems to use OpenWindows at no charge. OpenWindows media and documentation are priced at $295. The XView toolkit is also available at no charge as part of the X11, Release 4 tape from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The elements of OpenWindows will be a standard part of UNIX System V, Release 4, to be introduced by AT&T.
