* * * Announcing * * * The Second Annual Sun User Group Southwest Regional Technical Conference Monday, October 9th, 1989 Albuquerque Convention Center Albuquerque, New Mexico Hosted this year by the Central New Mexico Sun Local User Group (last year it was hosted by the Los Alamos SLUG), this one-day conference will feature a keynote speaker from Sun Microsystems, user application talks, and a Sun Developers' Panel session, as well as presentations by 3rd-party software and hardware vendors of products which run on or with Sun computers. Also, Sun Microsystems will be hosting a "listening booth," similar to the one it had at the national conference in Miami last year, where attendees may air their gripes, complaints, complements, suggestions, or just random thoughts to representatives from Sun. In addition, the Annual Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta will be held October 7th through the 15th, allowing conference attendees arriving on Friday, the 6th, the opportunity to witness the mass ascensions which kick off the fiesta Saturday and Sunday mornings (or the beautiful 'moonglow' on Sunday night) before going to the conference on Monday. Or, stay through the week after the conference, take in the daily ballooning events, and watch the mass ascensions the next weekend (or both!). Registration is a paltry $20.00 for SUG members, $50.00 for non-members ($20.00 registration fee, and $30.00 SUG membership fee). A registration form is below, which you can print, fill out, and send in with your payment, or you can just E-mail the requested information using a Visa or Mastercard number. [ note, it would be safer if you included a phone number and we will call you for your credit card number... djw's editorial comment ] Travel arrangements may be made through Rosenbluth Travel. All attendees are offered a discounted room rate of $85 per night at the Albuquerque DoubleTree Hotel if arrangements are made through Rosenbluth. Call 1-800-222-1035 (ask for Fernanda or Gerri, and be sure to tell them that you're going to the SUG Conference). * * * * NOTE: The room block reserved for the conference is limited, and all hotel rooms, rental cars, etc., in Albuquerque will sell out quickly due to the Balloon Fiesta, SO MAKE YOUR ARRANGEMENTS *EARLY*! [ immediately! The rooms are only guaranteed till tomorrow... djw editorial comment ] * * * * All interested Sun users are invited, so plan on taking a long weekend in October to come to Albuquerque for the Regional User Group Conference, and maybe take in the Balloon Fiesta as well. Dave Becker CNMSLUG Officer --------------------- David C. Becker New Mexico Tech Computer Center Socorro, New Mexico 87801 [505] 835-5662 dave@nmt.edu ----- End Included Message ----- Abstract & Biographical Data for Ted Mihalisin, President, Mihalisin Associates, speaking for TempleGraph GRAPHICAL DATA ANALYSIS IN 2 TO 10 DIMENSIONS Abstract New interactive graphical data analysis methods that are used in TempleGraph v.2.3 will be discussed and demonstrated. For example, a tool for visually varying parameters embedded in a user defined function will be discussed in the context of data modelling, fitting and variable transformations. In addition, more standard tools such as zoom and delete will be discussed in the context of fitting, calculus operations, and descriptive statistics "what if" scenarios. Finally, a totally new hierarchical technique for graphing scalar fields in multiple dimensions will be presented. This technique allows one to recognize the mathematical form of multi-variate data almost as easily as one identifies functions of a single variable from simple x-y plots. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Biographical Data Ted Mihalisin President, Mihalisin Associates, & Professor of Physics, Temple University Ph.D., 1967, The University of Rochester Specialities: Experimental solid state physics and Scientific graphical analysis systems ---------------------------------------------------------------------- >From baron@Sun.COM Wed Aug 16 19:40:55 1989 BIO for Max Baron BSEE in Communications MS studies in Computers and Lasers, 13 years Computer Systems designer, 11 years with National Semiconductor: Manager of 32000 Architecture Group, 2 years with Sun: Manager SPARC Technology Applications Group. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- James Gosling received a BSc in Computer Science from the University of Calgary, Canada in 1977. He received a PhD in Computer Science from Carnegie-Mellon University in 1983. The title of his thesis was "The Manipulation of Algebraic Constraints". He is currently a "Distinguished Engineer" at Sun Microsystems. He has built satellite data acquisition systems, a multiprocessor version of Unix, several compilers, mail systems and window managers. He has also built a WYSIWYG text editor, a constraint based drawing editor and a text editor called `Emacs' for Unix systems. At Sun his primary activity has been as lead engineer of the NeWS window system. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TITLE: Development of the NSO Networked Computing Facility AUTHORS: Stephen Colley, Robert P. McGraw, Jr. ABSTRACT: The National Solar Observatory at Sunspot, New Mexico has recently completed the development of a network of SUN computers which replaced a minicomputer-based, data analysis facility. The new installation consists of a collection of SUN equipment, new third-party devices and several older commercial and custom peripherals. The presentation will describe the new facility with a concentration on hardware and software problems, solutions and issues encountered during the integration. BIOGRAPHIES: Stephen Colley received an MS in Scientific Instrumentation from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1974. Since that time he has been continuously involved in the development of instrumentation for physics research. At the University of Colorado he was responsible for the design of the electronics and detector systems on three of the instruments on the Solar Mesosphere Explorer earth satellite. At Ball Aerospacehe was involved in the development of microchannel plate detector systems. At the National Solar Observatory/Sacramento Peak he continues working in the area of electronic instrumentation and is the manager of the Instrument Development Laboratory. Robert P. McGraw, Jr. received a BS in Meteorology from Florida State University in 1975. After graduation he moved into the computer field where much of his work has been in support of scientific research. At the High Plans Experiment group in Miles City, Montana he was responsible for the development and implementation of software to analyze data collected from 100 automated meteorological stations in eastern Montana. During his four years in Saudi Arabia he was managerof the Scientific Progamming Department at the National Meteorological and Environmental Center where he was responsible for the operational meteorological and oceanographic analysis models. At the National Solar Observatory/ Sacramento Peak he moved into the system administration area where he is responsible for the management of several computer systems, the newest being a network of Suns.. Hope this has been helpful.
